To enquire into the grievances of the indigo cultivators..... Farmers were forced to grow indigo and other cash crops instead of the food crops which was necessary for their survival. These goods were bought from them at a very low price. Without food and without money, the situation was growing progressively unlivable and the peasants in Champaran revolted against conditions in indigo plant cultivation. Raj Kumar Shukla, an indigo cultivator, persuaded Mahatma Gandhi to go to Champaran and the Champaran Satyagraha began.??

M. Hamel was a true French man. Teaching at Alsace for forty years, he had become a part of its people. He was an honest teacher. He did not blame his students alone for poor learning. He also held himself responsible for the same. He was very patriotic as he appealed to his countrymen to hold fast to their mother tongue to be free from the Prussians. According to him the French language was the most beautiful, the clearest and the most logical language in the world. He appealed to his countrymen to guard it and never forget it. He was emotionally attached to the school and all his students. However, he was very brave and strong. He was really sorry for not making sincere efforts to teach French to his countrymen. At the end, he became so emotional that he could not speak.?:-)

According to the order from Berlin, only German was to be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. This order left Mr. Hamel, the village people and the Mr. Hamel's students in deep regret. The villagers regretted not having made utmost use of the French lessons that they had been given by Mr Hamel. They had engaged themselves in their profession to earn a living and had not taken their French lessons seriously. The children and the villagers sitting in the class had always thought that they had enough time to learn the language. But now, during the last French lesson, everybody realized their mistake. They realized how little they knew their native language. They all attended the last lesson to show their respect to their teacher and their country, which was no longer theirs.

Saheb

He accepted his fate and worked at a tea stall even though he was not happy about it. He had to do a number of odd jobs which included getting milk from the milk booth. He valued his independence more than money that is why he was not happy even though he earned Rs. 800 and got free meals.

Mukesh

He had the courage to dream big even though he lived in poverty. He belonged to a family of bangle sellers who had resigned to their fate and had suppressed their hopes and desires. He refused to take up the family profession of bangle making and wanted to be a motor mechanic when he grew up.
