Jack Finney's story The Third Level’ interweaves between fantasy and reality. The Third Level is medium of escape for Charley from the present harsh realities of modem life which is full of insecurity, fear, war, worry and tension. It is a safe route for Charley to go to Galesburg in order to escape from trouble. So he tries to purchase two tickets for Galesburg, Illinois from the Third Level at Grand Central.

The Third Level is merely a fantasy that exists in Charley s mind only. His psychiatrist friend, Sam calls it a waking-dream-wish-fulfilment. In reality Charley fails to cope up with the modern world which is full of fears and worries. He just wants to escape. He takes it for a reality and plans to go to Galesburg. He even exchanges his new bills of three hundred dollars for old style bills. But he is never able to find the Third Level. It is because the Third Level has existed in his fantasy only. Hence it can be well ascertained that the Third-Level is a medium of escape for Charley. It is only his escapist fantasy.

Stephen Spender highlights the plight of slum children by using vivid images and apt words to picture a classroom in a slum. Through this, he touches, in a subtle manner, the themes of social injustice and inequalities.
Slums form and grow in different parts of the world for many different reasons. Causes include rapid rural-to-urban migration, economic stagnation and depression, high unemployment, poverty, informal economy, forced or manipulated ghettoization, poor planning, politics, natural disasters and social conflicts.

Flattery as is evident in this story, is prevalent at  almost all places. It basically satisfies the ego of person who is being treated in lofty terms. With words and gestures a false world is created around so as to befool that fellow. Here, the Tiger King is flattered by his courtiers ,who just to avoid making him upset, do not raise their voice against anything unethical happening around them.Actually the person frames unrealistic ideas about himself and falls prey to the sweetened pills. Wrong deeds are committed so as to meet the self interest. The genuine people are ignored at the cost of fake ones. It checks the healthy growth of relationships and whence the development of society. The real cause and issues are left behind and pretension prevail. This whole idea unfolds in Tiger King in a humorous manner - to appease the king, The King's Courtiers do  not spare a single chance to fulfill his whims and fancies. He wanted to prove the astrologer wrong ,so he decided to kill 100 tigers in his estate. This act of the king troubled everyone but no one came forward to stop him ,as a result of which the tigers became extinct .Such sort of administration leads to ultimate fall of estate. King met his end on operation table at the hands of his saviors i.e., doctors.

Edla was kind and good natured. She had more convincing power than her father and was able to persuade the peddler to accept the invitation. She was pained by the plight of the peddler and continued to treat him well even after the truth about his identity was revealed. Her behaviour reflects maturity and grace. Edla Willmansson, the shy and modest daughter of the ironmaster, came to persuade the peddler to come to their home for Christmas. Unlike her father, Edla is a compassionate, sympathetic and understanding girl and because of these virtues, she succeeds in reforming the peddler. The ironmaster, on the other hand, is impulsive and whimsical. He commits a mistake by getting the peddler confused with an old acquaintance of his and invites him to his house. As soon as the peddler's true identity is revealed, he decides to refer the whole matter to the sheriff. He does not even consider it for a while that he must let the man stay till Christmas. He has not convinced of Edla’s decision of helping the tramp. Edla continues to be nice and hospitable to him and does not turn him out of her house on Christmas Eve. She treats the peddler like a real captain and he too behaves like one. She, thus, awakens the potential goodness of his heart. Before leaving the manor house, the peddler leaves a packet as a Christmas gift for Edla. The packet consists of a rattrap, the crofter's stolen money and a letter, in which he confesses his gratitude and crime and requests Edla to return the thirty kronors to the old crofter. It is evident that he becomes a totally positive character and all his flaws are gone.

Dr. Sadao Hoki was a true Japanese like his father. He was a brave boy who obeyed and respected his father and loved Japanese culture, tradition and people. He was intelligent and hardworking and studied surgery and medicine in America for eight years. He married a Japanese girl, Hana, whom he had met in America. But he waited for his father’s approval and their marriage was arranged in the old Japanese way after they had returned home in Japan. They had two children. He still loved his wife as warmly as ever.
Dr. Sadao was an eminent surgeon as well as a scientist. The old General had full faith in him. He was not sent abroad with the troops because the old General might need an operation. Dr. Sadao was called even at odd hours from the palace. Dr. Sadao was a real doctor. He would not let a man die if he could help him. That is why he cured even an “enemy” of bullet wound and did not hand him over to the police. He faced a great risk to his position and life by sheltering the man. Since Dr. Sadao could not kill the man himself, he sought the help of the old General to get rid of him. When that plan failed, he let the prisoner escape in order to calm down the fears of his wife and let the household run properly. It may be a blemish from a narrow patriotic angle but a sensitive soul can’t take back what he has given.

He gives the prisoner his boat and helps him to escape safely thus honoring both the values that he was a patriotic Japanese as well as a dedicated surgeon.

Critical appreciation of a poem is defined as the critical reading of a poem. It does not mean criticising the poem. A critical appreciation helps in a better understanding of the verse. Meaning- Read the poem more than once to get a clear idea of what the speaker is trying to say.

The title is apt as the poem is about the narrator’s realisation that time has flown by and old age has crept up on her mother. The poem revolves around the theme of advancing age, the fear associated with it, and loss and separation.
