After stealing the crofter's money, the rattrap peddler did not think it proper to walk on the public highway. So he turned off the road , into the forest. But he got entrapped in a big and confusing forest. He tried to walk in a definite direction, but the paths twisted back and forth in a strange manner.
He walked and walked without without coming to the end of the forest.
Finally, he realised that he had only been walking around the the same part of the forest.
Then he recalled his thoughts about the world and the rattrap. Now, his own turn had come.
The rattrap peddler thus thought that he had indeed fallen into a rattrap from which he might not be able to escape.

He is the primary antagonist of the main character Evans. Although he is intelligent, his arrogance in his intellect becomes his weakness. In the story, he is shown as a man who is very carefully monitors Evans’ every step as he is afraid that he might give them the slip. He is skeptical about Evans since he had already fooled them thrice. The governor detects Evans’ treachery when he couldn’t understand a basic German expression ‘Gluten Gluck’. This instance bears testimony to the fact that the governor was indeed a very smart man. He even deciphers the secret message which helps him track Evans’ whereabouts. Unfortunately, he becomes blinded by the faith in his own capabilities and foolishly lets Evans escape one more time. When he traced Evans to Hotel Golden Lion, he does not anticipate that the felon would be well-prepared to escape. He does not take enough force with himself. He fails to keep Evans under high security because of his arrogance. Despite being antagonistic towards him in the outset, the governor did have a softer side and harboured a soft spot for Evans.
