We can know about the interior of the earth through many ways for example:Through volcano, Mining,By studying earthquake waves(seismology)and through Meteorites.

Ananya Hoda 4 years, 2 months ago

1) *Mining*- E.g. Gold mines in South Africa which are as deep as 3-4 km. 2) *Deep Drilling Projects* taken up by scientists to explore the conditions in the crustal portions. E.g. 'Deep Ocean Drilling Project' and 'Integrated Ocean Drilling Project'. 3) *Volcanic Eruption* forms another source of obtaining info. by analysing the molten material (magma) thrown onto the surface (lava). 4) *Analysis of the properties of matter*(e.g. Temp., pressure, density etc) indirectly provides info. about the interior of the earth.

Analysis of properties of matter indirectly provides information about the interior:

  1. Meteors: A meteor, known colloquially as a shooting star or falling star, is the visible passage of a glowing meteoroid, micrometeoroid, comet or asteroid through Earth's atmosphere, after being heated to incandescence by collisions with air molecules in the upper atmosphere, creating a streak of light via its rapid motion and sometimes also by shedding glowing material in its wake. Although a meteor may seem to be a few thousand feet from the Earth, meteors typically occur in the mesosphere at altitudes from 76 to 100 km (250,000 to 330,000 ft). The root word meteor comes from the Greek meteōros, meaning "high in the air".
  2. Gravitation: is a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass or energy including planets, stars, galaxies, and even light are brought toward one another. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects and the Moon's gravity. causes the ocean tides. The gravitational attraction of the original gaseous matter present in the Universe caused it to begin coalescing, forming stars - and for the stars to group together into galaxies - so gravity is responsible for many of the large-scale structures in the Universe. Gravity has an infinite range, although its effects become increasingly weaker on farther objects.
  3. Magnetic field:  AIt also provides information on magnetic materials in the crustal portion, and thus, provides information about the distribution of materials in this part.
