Q.7 Read the following passage carefully : (8 Marks ) Corruption, in one form or another, is a worldwide phenomenon. But everyone admits that corruption is something ugly, immoral and detestable. Unfortunately, in our country, corruption has become a part of life. It has entered the very roots of the Indian society. Corruption, nepotism and dishonesty have tarnished every fabric of our social life. The law of a land is too weak to deal with the corrupt elements with an iron hand. The vested interests rule the roost. Everybody feels helpless in such a state of affairs. Some people have even started talking of the nationalization of corruption in the country. They argue that we should frankly admit that we are a corrupt nation and that we cannot do without it. It is a matter of shame and regret for all those who care to hear the call of their conscience. Corruption is prevailing at all levels — economic, social, administrative, moral and spiritual. During the past few years, the images of the country has been defaced beyond redemption. A large number of scams, involving top politicians, administrators and VVIPs have come to light. These scams, most of them unearthed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, involve huge sums running into thousands of crores. They have shaken the entire conscience of the country to the bones. The law enforcing agencies are seeking the help of the judicial process to bring the culprits to book. The judicial system however, is full of flaws and the culprits do not find it very difficult to cleverly escape the legal net. People are beginning to take corruption for granted. The root cause of corruption is red tape or delay. Persons found guilty should be punished severely. Exemplary punishments should be given to corrupt officials, national character should be improved. Smugglers, black marketeers and hoarders should be severely dealt with. Social and spiritual organizations can give a good healthy education to the public. Persons of strong character should be employed. The Government employees must be told to withstand any temptation while discharging their duties. Such officials as lay down noble standards of honesty and efficiency, should be encouraged and honoured at public functions. Dishonest public servants should not only be dismissed, but system of the country should be re-oriented to inculcate a spirit of honesty amongst the people. All ministers and public servants should be made to declare their assets. The vigilance department should keep a constant eye on the corrupt officers and other public servants. Ministers and senior officials must set noble examples of an honest living free from corruption, bribery, nepotism and immorality. The law of the land should be provided with more teeth to deal with the corrupt elements. Corruption, at any level, is bad. The Government should launch a vigorous campaign against this social evil. Charity, however, must begin at home. ( Words 484) On the basis of your reading the above passage , make notes on it, using abbreviations wherever necessary. Supply a suitable title also. increased world population leads to global warming because more populaiton require more basic needs like homes ,food etc and we are totally depend on nature and for more money people cutdown the trees and take other natural things to fulfill our needs

Population growth is the increase in the number of people living in a particular area. Since populations can grow exponentially, resource depletion can occur rapidly, leading to specific environmental concerns such as global warming, deforestation and decreasing biodiversity. In general, population growth plays a key role in environmental sustainability. It can lead to the deforestation, water pollution, and air pollution. These have a negative effect on the environment and also impact human daily lives. Governments and agencies must now mitigate how and where they will use resources.

The earth's four principal biological systems namely, fisheries, forests, grasslands and croplands are the foundation of the global economic system. In addition to supplying food, these systems provide virtually all the raw materials for industry except minerals and petroleum-derived synthetics.

Man has entertained many false illusions. He considers himself to be the lord of this world. His arrogance and misdeeds have caused untold havoc and destruction. He considers that he has a freehold on this earth. He can indulge himself in plundering of natural wealth and resources at will. The protein-conscious and hungry world has ruined fishing. Forests are disappearing at the rate of an acre and a half every second. Grasslands and croplands are being converted into wastelands and deserts. Man is the most dangerous animal of the world who has made this earth an ailing planet.
We should remember that we are not the masters but only the trustees of this planet. We owe a duty to leave this earth in good health and good shape to the coming generations. As Margaret Thatcher says we have only a life tenancy and not the ownership. Nor have we inherited this world from our forefathers. We have borrowed it from our children. At all costs we have to maintain a sustainable development. We must meet our present needs without harming the interests and needs of the coming generations.

This world can’t be studied in isolation. The mechanical view of the world gives a distorted picture. We need to develop a holistic view of the world. It is a comprehensive view of the world with all its natural resources and species. Human beings are just a part of it. Like a human body this earth is a living organism. It has its own metabolism. We should not destroy this natural growth and functioning of the world.

Meghna Thapar 5 years, 1 month ago

A holistic and ecological view – It refers to the view that calls for the preservation of the planet. The holistic and ecological view refers to understanding the importance of earth's resources and environment for the future generations. The ecological design perspective is about how the system or product works within its external environment. It is about how the system or product is used in its context and how the system or product interacts or communicates with its environment in the process.

The signs of the earth connected with life necessary for staying alive show that the earth is a patient in declining health. Its deserts are advancing, landscapes are being impoverished and environment is ailing. Aerial photography using satellites has revealed that the environment has deteriorated very badly in many parts of the world. In fact, it has became critical in many of the eighty eight countries investigated. The concept of sustainable development and green movement can help the ailing planet to survive. People must discharge their moral responsibility as stewards of the planet and trustees of the legacy of the future generations. The plundering of the natural resources should be controlled. These must be preserved for the future generations.

Certainly, man has been the most dangerous animal that ever lived on this earth.
He has swallowed fisheries, forest, grasslands and croplands. The notice at a cage in the zoo at lusaka reads the world's most dangerous animal.
Inside the case there is no animal but only a mirror where you can see yourself.
The mirror reflects the image of the real villain . He is none else than the man himself.

The total forest area is 4.06 billion hectares, or approximately 5 000m2 (or 50 x 100m) per person, but forests are not equally distributed around the globe. Half of the forests that originally covered 48 percent of the Earth's land surface are gone. Only one-fifth of the Earth's original forests remain pristine and undisturbed. In North America, more than half of the coastal temperate rainforests, once extending from California to Alaska, have been destroyed.

The Green movement:   it is a diverse scientific, social, conservation, and political movement that broadly addresses the concerns of the environment. It was started in 1972. It aims at creating a holistic and ecological view of the world.

It has become more popular because nowadays the population was increasing so, because of population people need more space and they were cutting down forests commonly as deforestation, and for those populations we need clothes, food, etc and that we industries for producing those things. For setting up those industries we need space and then we also cut the forests, then again deforestation.

The narrator wanted to wipe out her past. She realised that the things are not associated with memories, but memories remain with you irrespective of what you have. She had no use of the silver and the antique things that once belonged to her family. She lived in a small room where scarps of the paper that was used as blackout paper still clung to the windows. She had no place for all those things in that small room so she decided to leave without taking the things back. Moreover the things had lost their charm and did not remind her of her mother anymore.

Yogita Ingle 5 years, 1 month ago

The narrator came back without her belonging because she believed that the memory objectives are linked with the items. So they immediately lost value once they are in a strange surrounding after some time. In the case old, the narrator, her belongings lost means when they have seen at Dorling’s house. She understood that taking them back they will be strange in her new home. And that is the reason why she did not come back to claim them.

Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: One of the greatest advances in modern technology has been the invention of computers. They are widely used in industries and in universities , Now there is hardly any sphere of human life where computers have not been pressed into service of man.We are heading fast towards the day when a computer will be as much part of man's daily life as a telephone or a calculator. 2: Computers are capable of doing extremely complicated work in all branches of learning They can solve the most complex mathematical problems or put thousands of unrelated facts in order. These machines can be put to varied uses. For instance, they can provide information on the best way to prevent traffic jams. This whole process by which machines can be used to work for us has been called automation .in the future automation may enable human beings to enjoy more leisure than they do today. The coming of automation is bound to have important social consequences. 3 some years ago expert on automation, sir leon bagrit, pointed out that it was a mistake to believe that these machines ". through computers are capable of learning from their mistakes and improving o their performance, they need detailed instructions from human beings to operate. they can never, as it were, lead independent lives or " rule the world " by making decisions of their own. 4 sir leon said that in future, computers would be developed which would be small enough to carry in the pocket. ordinary people would then be able to use them to obtain valuable information. computers could be plugged into a national network and be used like radios. for instance, people going on holiday could be informed about weather conditions. car drivers can be given alternative routes when there are traffic jams. it will also be possible to make tiny translating machines. this will enable people who do not share a common language to talk to each other without any difficulty or to read foreign publications. 5 it is impossible to assess the importance of a machine of this sort, for many international misunderstandings are caused simply due to our failure to understand each other. computers will also be used in ordinary public hospitals. by providing a machine with a patient 's system, a doctor will be able to diagnose the nature of his illness. similarly machines could be used to keep a check on a patient's health record and keep it up to date. doctor will, therefore, have immediate access to great many facts which will help them in their work. According to the poem, the process of growing up involves the attainment of mental maturity and loss of innocence and simplicity. A person is said to be grown up when he has become logical, rational and is able to build his own thoughts. A grown up has the power to distinguish between reality and fantasy.
A grown up individual understands the actions of others just as the poet recognises the hiatus between the preaching and the practice of the adults. He realises the hypocrisy and the double standards maintained by the adults. A mature individual also asserts his thoughts and opinions.

His actions are for the best of both Ranga and Ratna. In his heart he has only love for both of them. Ultimately, Aram and Mourad returned the horse to its rightful owner, John Byro. It gives birth to two questions. Were they conscience-stricken or afraid? The answer is very simple. They were conscience-stricken. Both of them belonged to the Garoghlanian family. The family had earned name and fame for integrity and honesty. No member of the tribe could ever be accused of dishonesty or any shady deal. Aram and Mourad dared not break that glorious tradition. They had to maintain the good name and honesty of Garoghlanians. Hence, they overcame their childish passions and pranks. They decided to return the horse to Byro. Yes, they feared too. They feared to be considered as thieves. They feared lest they should put their tribe to shame by their action.

No doubt, there came moments when both Aram and Mourad justified the stealing of the horse. Stealing a horse for riding and fun was not the same as stealing and selling it for money. Hence, Mourad stole the horse and hid it in the barn. Pangs of conscience pricked them. Hence, they decided to return the horse to its rightful owner.
