Khushwant Singh presents his grandmother as a symbol of love, care and affection. She was a highly religious and conservative lady but, a woman of generosity and nobility. she was like everybody’s grandmother, loving her grandson immensely and caring for him with deep love and concern. She was not physically attractive. She was old, fat and short with a stoop and hobbled about the house with her hand supporting waist, reciting her prayers and telling her beads. In the village, she was actively involved in her grandson’s life but when they shifted to the city, the bond of friendship was broken. Yet, she presented she presented a picture of peace and contentment always.

Ans. Problems were piling up on board, especially when the hand pumps started to block up with the debris floating around the cabins and the electric pump short-circuited.
The water level rose threateningly. The narrator tried to get a temporary arrangement and put through Mayday calls as the night dragged on with the endless, bitterly cold routine of pumping, steering and working the radio.
His daughter Sue's head had swollen alarmingly and she had two enormous black eyes along with a deep cut on her arm. However, there were no replies to his Mayday calls from the other

Ans.The author was inspired by Captain James Cooks expedition around the world, 200 years ago. Thus, he embarked on a trip on his Wavewalker boat to emulate the voyage, with his family. They had been preparing for the past 16 years, spending all their leisure time honing their seafaring skills in British waters in lieu of their round the world voyage. Their boat, the Wavewalker, was a 23 metre, 30 ton wooden-hulled beauty which had been professionally built and they had spent months fitting it out and testing it in the roughest weather possible. The family also took on two crewmen, American Larry Vigil and Swiss Herb Seigler to help them tackle one of the world's roughest seas, the southern Indian Ocean.

Tips for factual description-
An ideal factual description of a process must include the following things-
1.A scientific and thorough knowledge of a particular process. For example , making a cup of tea or opening a saving bank account requires knowledge of all the details involved in such processes or operations.
2.A systematic description of that process is necessary. For example you can't write that you received cash first and filled the withdrawal slip afterwards.
3.Description of a process demands a spontaneous and continuous narration. You can't leave any single part . Nor can you add anything which is not a part of the process.Your description should be based on the facts alone.
4.Factual description of a process does not need a philosophical treatment but a clear cut scientific approach. Brevity , clarity and factual correctness are the main features of the factual description of a process.

Sub:Poor unhygienic conditions and water menace in Anna Nagar
It is unfortunate that Chennai Corporationis adopting a step-motherly attitude in providing civic amenities to the -Non-V.I.P. areas in the city. Colonies like Anna Nagar , where low-income groups reside are left to rot and sting because of impure water.
The Welfare Association , Anna Nagar , has been highligting the local issues before Chennai Corporation but in vain. The water supply is erractic and polluted. As the result the residents of our area are leading a miserable life. They fall victims of contagious diseases like Cholera , Diarrohea and Jaundice. Many peole have lost their near and dear ones because of these seriou diseases. No serious efforts have been made to ensure regular and pre water supply.Every year hundreds of people fall victim to serious diseases. Unfortunately ,no concrete steps have been taken to resolve the issue. We hpoe Chennai Corporation will rise from its slumber It will take prompt remedial steps to make Anna Nagar,a colony fit for habitation.

Life is full of horros and excitements. There are people who live live life as it comes to them. They never fear death. Nor do they hesitate to undertake hazardous experiences. Such ordeals and hazardous experiences are quite rewarding. There is no gain without pains. In the lesson 'We're not Afraid to die', the narrator , his wife Mary and children Sue and Jonathanundertake to duplicate the round the world voyage. Such a daring and historic voyage was made two hundred years earlier by Captain James Cook.It was a planned three-year , 1,05,000 kilometre journey.Their troubles started when they sailed to the east of Cape Town. Gigantic waves and thundering storms proved more than a match. They brought untold sufferings and disasters. Gales and waves broke over the ship. The narratorsleft ribs cracked and his mouth was filled with blood and broken teeth. Even his little daughter Sue had a big bump above her eyes. But the narrator did not lose courage.
Such hazarous experiences teach us to be fearless and brave. They teach the lessons of determination , courage and patience. Ordeals and accidents have to be faced bravely. We cnanot close our eyes from the impending disasters. A perfect team-work helps us to survive against such disasters. Not only the crewmen showed extra ordinary courage but the children also showed rare courage. They declared that they were not afraid to die.. Hope sustains life. Patience and hard work are rewarded in the end. Ile Amsterdam was in front of their eyes. They anchored offshore for the night. The next morning , all 28 inhabitants of the island cheered as they helped them ashore.
To sum up , the lesson gives us the message that virtues like hardwork, patience and firm determination are the key to overcome the hardships of life.

The last paragraph says that fathers and sons all over the world should learn to live on the same globe and same land. In the end, the father has a realization that he is the one who cannot understand himself and gets angry. The father concludes that each one of them is willing to forgive the other but neither wants to take the first step. Respecting each other’s differences is the only way out to diminish the distance between parents and children.

Mr. Otis is the American Ambassador. He is a very rich man who came from a modern country where everything can be bought with money. He bought Canterville Chase and went there to live with his family. He doesn’t care about the ghost because he doesn’t believe in it."
Also, I would say Mr. Otis is a serious, sensible man. He doesn't get nervous easily. Other characteristics about him include the fact that he enjoys horseback riding, he seems to be a good husband to Mrs. Otis, and he loves his daughter Virginia. He is also a good person who wants to do the right thing. You can tell because he gives Sir Simon a proper funeral, and he makes sure that Virginia gets the box of jewels which Sir Simon had left her.

The contrast between British and American culture is a central theme in "The Canterville Ghost" and is prevalent from the opening paragraph. In the conversation between Lord Canterville and Mr Otis, for instance, Wilde establishes this culture clash as the two men share their differing beliefs in the supernatural.
Once the Otis family take possession of the house, American beliefs and values are pitted against those of the British Canterville ghost. Relying on tradition and his historical reputation to scare the family, the Canterville ghost represents the world of the British aristocracy. In contrast, the Otis family are unmoved by the ghost's attempts to scare them and, in this way, they symbolise the rational and modern American family. We see this clearly through their repeated removal of the blood-stain in the library with Pinkerton's and the offer of Tammany Sun Rising Lubricator so that the ghost can oil his rattling chains.
Ultimately, Wilde favours neither the British nor American way of life in "The Canterville Ghost." Instead, he advocates the coming-together of these two cultures for mutual benefit. This is demonstrated through the partnering of the ghost and Virginia in Chapter Five when she helps the ghost to atone for his sins. In addition, Virginia's marriage to the Duke at the end of the story suggests that these opposing cultures can work together and, in doing so, create happiness and prosperity for everyone.

Ans. The narrator and his wife wanted to ‘duplicate’ the round—the world voyage made 200 years earlier by Captain James Cook. They had been making formidable preparations for the last 16 years. First of all they got a boat especially designed and professionally built for this purpose. It was a 23 metre, 30 tonne wooden-hulled boat. They tested it for months in the roughest weather. They were both mentally and physically prepared to undertake their exceptionally long and challenging sea-voyage.
