Silk Road is an extract from a travelogue written by Nick Middleton. The author describes his pilgrimage to Mount Kailash. As the narrator starts from Ravu towards Kailash to perform Kora, he describes all the things he sees-landscape, people and animals. He wants to be more adventurous than to be religious. The Silk Road was the main trade route between Kashmir to China. Silk was one of the main commodities that were traded in those areas. So, it was rightly named as ‘Silk Road’. It was early morning when the author left Ravu with his companions Daniel and Tsetan. Tsetan, the driver of his vehicle, knew the short cut route to Mount Kailash. They moved across the vast open grassy plains to the stony plains. Sometimes they saw a few gazelles and wild asses. The way through the hills started. On the way they met solitary drokbas tending their flocks and also the dark tents of the nomads. Giant Tibetan mastiffs would chase the author’s car for a hundred metres or so. They could see snow capped mountains far away. The ride became bumpier because of the sharp bends near the valley. After a while Tsetan had to stop the car because of snow. They flung dust on the snow capped route to ease the car. There was another blockage after about ten minutes. But somehow Tsetan negotiated it. At the height of 5515 metres they took a turn round the cairn of rocks. By late afternoon they had reached the small town of Hor from where Daniel left to Lhasa. Hor seemed a grim place even though it was on the shore of Lake Manasarovar, the most venerated stretch of water. The author was eager to forge ahead towards Mount Kailash. They reached Darchen at night. The author had to pass a troublesome night in Darchen. In the morning Tsetan took him to Darchen Medical College. The Tibetan doctor gave him some medicine and assured him that he would be able to do the Kora. Tsetan went back leaving the author alone after his recovery. Author was worried because there were no pilgrims at Darchen. He couldn’t find any person who speaks enough English to answer his questions. He met Norbu in Darchen’s only café. Norbu after introducing himself told the author that he had come to do the Kora. The author was happy to find his company. He decided that Norbu would turn out to be the ideal companion.

The poem revolves around the theme of lost childhood. For the poet, childhood seems to be a thing of past. He ponders over the questions as to ‘when’ and ‘where’ did his childhood go. He tries to identify the specific moment, time or day when he lost his childhood and stepped into adulthood.

The poet indicates that childhood is naive. At this stage of life, rational thinking and individuality are yet to be developed. The poet feels that his childhood is gone forever and can only be found in the innocent face of an infant.

Everyone needs a holiday, both to relax and to have a change of environment. The holiday makers feel relaxed and refreshed at the end of the holiday and look forward to the resumption of their duties, be it at school, office or factories, with renewed vigour. This is the reason why all establishments grant their employees annual leave. With the end of the Academic year the schools and universities grant their pupils a long holiday during mid-summer. This was last until early September when the new school term starts. Of course the parents will like to take advantage of this and take their leave to coincide with the children's vacations. This has become a traditional holiday season in most European countries particularly in England. With the coming of August, the traditional holiday season in Britain reaches its peak point and most of the holiday resorts are packed to capacity. In order to avoid the crowd, some prefer to take their holiday a little easier if facilities so warrant. Those who have already taken their holidays can console themselves not only with reflections on the happy days spent in the country, at the seaside or abroad, but also with the thought that holiday expenses are over for the year and that by taking an earlier holiday they have missed the August rush. The main thing, of course, is the weather and that it would be hazardous to prophesy. But whatever the weather is like, the essence of a holiday for mot is the carefree atmosphere in which it can be enjoyed. "Take all you need but leave our worries behind" is the sound advice for the holiday maker. Private worries are not always easy to escape from. However, even the pessimist would admit that for the moment things appear brighter than they have been. Holiday time is surely a time for shedding serious pre-occupations and seeking the pleasures that appeal to us. It is true that we may not always succeed in finding them, indeed there are people who maintain that the great thing about holiday it gives you an ampler appreciation of home comforts 'a view no doubt more widely held among the elderly than you. I.a) On the basis of your reading the above passage, make notes using headings and sub-headings. Use recognizable abbreviations, wherever necessary. And also suggest a suitable title. b) Write a summery of the above passage in not more than 80 words using the notes made.
