This poem by Vikram Seth is a humorous satire on people in power. The poet has humorously presented the idea that it does not matter to people who their ruler, king, or head of state is as long as he allows them to live in peace, liberty and the principles of laissez faire. Once upon a time there was city named The Melon City. There lived a placid and just king. He proclaimed an arch to be constructed across the thoroughfare for the edification of people. The arch was built too low. The king’s crown was knocked down when he passed from below it. The king became angry and wanted to punish the chief builder by hanging them. The gallows were set up. As the builder was brought for hanging, he fell on his knees pleading for mercy. He said it was the workmen’s fault that the arch had been built low. The king pardoned the builder and ordered the workmen to be hanged. When the workmen were to be hanged, they pleaded to the king it was not their fault. They had been supplied the wrong size bricks. So, the masons were called who passed the buck onto architect. Thus everyone passed the blame to someone else. In this manner, architect was called to be hanged. With folded hands he reminded the king that the king himself had made amendments in the plan he had shown him. Now the king became very confused. He said he needed some counsel on this very tricky matter as to who must be hanged. So he ordered the wisest man of his kingdom to be brought to him. In that kingdom wisest was he who was the oldest in age. So a man who was on death bed was brought. He advised the king that it was the arch that was the culprit and it must be hanged. So a huge gallows were set up for the hanging of the arch. Now, a councilor said the arch could not be hanged as it had become pure by touching the head of the king. By this time the crowd had become impatient and restless for a hanging. Fearing their subversion the king ordered immediate hanging of anyone to pacify the crowd. So all who were present, were tried to fit in the high set noose. Only the king fitted perfectly. And according to his order he was hanged. Now this city had a bizarre custom of electing the new king. Any one passing through the street the next day would elect the king. So when the guards, next morning asked the passer-by who must the king be of the city, he replied, “Melon”. This passer-by was an idiot whose staple answer to all the questions put to him was “Melon”. So a melon was crowned as the king. Thenceforth the city came to be known as ‘Melon City’. This is the story the city people tell to those who ask them the reason behind the name of their city.

Ghat signifies death

Gaurav Seth 6 years, 9 months ago

Word ‘Ghat’ in Hindi means ‘bank’ of a river; in the title of the chapter, it signifies the edge of life, where Shahid was struggling for life. Owing to his malignant tumour, he was about to leave this world and start a mysterious journey into the unknown world that exists after death. Since the word ‘Ghat’ refers to the brink of our wordl, which is the only world known to us, so the title is justified.

Shahid is the central character of the story, ‘The Ghat of the Only World, written by Amitav Ghosh. The author has dedicated this chapter to commemorate Shaid’s greatness as a human being. The author was very much impressed with Shahid’s works: The Country Without a Post Office, had made a powerful impression on him. His writing was lyrical, disciplined, engaged and yet deeply inward. Shahid was immensely fond of life’s all beautiful things, food included. As visitors would approach his door, aroma of rogan josh and haak would greet them. He loved cooking Kashmiri dishes and made them tasty by adding all the spices. He would often give directions to the cook in the kitchen to make the food tastier. Until the end of life, he enjoyed food and its fragrance. Shahid had a sorcerer’s ability to transmute the mundane into magical. Shahid was a very strong man. He had found a way out to keep himself alive in spite of the physical and mental pain of his illness. There was never an evening when there was not a party in his living room. He loved to be surrounded by people and friends. He loved that spirit of festivity as it meant he did not have any time to be depressed. Contrary to general belief of people about the Muslim fanaticism, Shahid and his parents had quite secular ecumenical outlook on life. In his childhood Shahid’s parents not only allowed him to set up a small Hindu temple in his home, but his mother also bought him idols and other needed things to do the Pooja. After Shahid’s passing away, the author felt a void in his life, which could not be filled.

Ranga is a boy who had gone to Bangalore for higher education. It was a rare occurrence in the village. Ranga came back acquiring education, but at the same time he did not discard his religion or traditional good manners. Even after the Bangalore education, he still touched the elders' feet while greeting them.

But a change in the outlook is inevitable after having educated in a big city. As a result, Ranga came with a whole lot of modern ideas about life and marriage. He wanted to get married to a sufficiently old girl, so that they will not have a communication gap. He wanted a love marriage in which the couple knows each other thoroughly.

But his neighbour and the narrator of the story is determined to get him married in the conventional way and settled in their own village. The innocent Ranga is easily manipulated into marrying, contrary to his modern ideas. This shows that the modernity is just superficial and Ranga is a boy who is deeply influenced by conventions.

Uncle Khosrov is the uncle of the protagonist Aram. He is notorious for his bad temper. He is highly impatient and set aside any problem without even listening to the details. When his son reported that their house is on fire, he shouted the same 'It's no harm, pay no attention to it'. Now it is a matter of debate whether this is because he is slightly mad or he is just bad tempered and impatient.

Uncle Khosrov is a character from the story, 'The summer of the beautiful white horse' written by Willian Saroyan. This character strikes as funny with his immediate dismissal of any problem with a "It's no harm, pay no attention to it".

When Mourad, Aram's cousin 'borrowed' Mr. Byro's horse, so that they could ride it for a while, he was rather thoughtless and risked the reputation of their tribe for honesty. It made Aram wonder if he has inherited Uncle Khosrov's impulsive nature. At the end of the story when John Byro came to their house to complain about his horse being stolen, Uncle Khosrov shouted at him asking him not to pay attention to it.

Maurad was considered one of the craziest members of the narrator’s family. He was full of life and loved following his passions without caring for people around him. He could do anything to do the things he loved. He even risked his tribe's reputation for his passion for riding. Mourad had the knack of handling almost any critical situation. His heart was spilling with love for animals. However, Aram in spite of being younger was more practical. He was not as crazy as his elder cousin. He was worried about his family's reputation. He was neither a good rider nor as spontaneously efficient as his cousin. The two cousins had a wonderful rapport between them and they got along pretty well.
