Grandmother and grandson had very fabulous friendship in village but when they came in city ,this was a turning point in their friendship.

Sarthak Agarwal 6 years, 7 months ago

The bond of friendship and understanding remained strong between the grandmother and the grandson when they were in their village. She lovingly looked after all his needs— waking him up, getting him ready for school, attempting to teach him prayers and escorting him to and from school. While his classes went on, she sat in the adjacent temple, reading the scriptures till school got over. Such was the closeness of their bond. The turning point came when the author and his grandmother shifted to the city, with the bonds of friendship gradually weakening. Though they shared the same room, they no longer had common interests. Once Khushwant Singh started going to an English-medium school by bus, his grandmother could no longer accompany him. Neither could she help him with his studies as the subjects were not known to her. She silently disapproved of the fact that her grandson wasn’t being taught about God or the scriptures but was being taught science and music. In her opinion, music wasn’t meant for gentlefolk. Thus, their long hours of togetherness decreased. It was as if the grandmother was weaning herself away from her grandson’s life. Their relationshipbroke down further when the author was given a separate room once he started attending university. When he went abroad for higher studies, his grandmother didn’t display any emotion, mainly so Khushwant could depart in a peaceful frame of mind. On his return after five years, she welcomed him by beating the drum and singing folk songs about the homecoming of heroes, thus, showing her joy. Right through the narrative, a strong bond exists between the two. It doesn’t decrease but only becomes less obvious as time passes, which is only natural due to life’s changing circumstances.

The narrator’s cousin, Mourad, had inherited the streak of adventurous and crazy behaviour found in each generation of his tribe. He seemed to have inherited this wild streak from his Uncle Khosrove. Actually, Mourad did things that more conventional persons never thought of doing: whereas his tribe was famous for its honesty and integrity, he stole a horse so as to satisfy his longing for riding. Moreover, while enjoying that illicit pleasure [of riding a stolen horse], when he should have been careful to avoid detection, Mourad actually started singing at the top of his voice. Furthermore, he believed he had a way with animals and people and could get away with things, which ultimately proved to be true.

The title is apt as the photograph plays a significant role in the poem. The whole poem revolves around the photo depicting the poet’s mother and her cousins, in their childhood, enjoying a beach holiday. When alive, the mother often used to look at that snapshot, recalling the happy times of the past. The photo serves a more important purpose in the poet’s case. Her mother’s death has left a deep void in her life. However, the pain of her loss is alleviated somewhat by the memories associated with that photo. That photo may also symbolise the indestructible quality of memories — it has survived the passage of time whereas thee mother hasn’t.

‘This circumstance’ refers to Shirley Toulson’s mother’s death and the resulting period of loneliness as well as the sense of loss the poet experiences. Since death is inevitable, one can’t avoid it but can only accept it silently. Her mother’s death overwhelms her to such an extent that she feels at a loss for words to express the depth of her pain.

This circumstance” refers to the circumstance when the photo was taken. "This circumstance" refer to the life after the death of the mother. The death of the mother brought sorrow and sad nostalgic feelings to the poet as the silences caused due to the departure of the loved one silences everything .
