Quinten  once sneaked into his beloved father's studio and painted a fly on his latest panel. It looked so much real that the painter tried to swat it away before realising that it was actually a painting. In this way, Quinten impressed his beloved's father, i.e., through his realistic painting.

The idea about art, presented in the story, is that only an artist can understand a piece of art deeply and only he is capable of diving deep into the spirit of the universe.

The story conveys that an emperor is only capable of ruling over his reign and maintaining it but is incapable of understanding the true spirit of art.

WU Daozi was an undisputedgreat artist of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) and one of the greatest of all Chinese artists. He was best known for his unrestrained style and superbskills. One day, sitting in the court, Emperor Xuanzong suddenly thought of the beautiful landscape of the Jialing River in today's Sichuan Province in southwest China. So, he ordered Wu to visit the place by himself and after returning to the capital, to paint the landscape on a wall in one of the imperial halls so that the emperor could see the scene whenever he wanted.

Wu spent weeks touring along the river and came back empty handed. The emperor asked Wu to show him his sketches, but Wu said they were all in his heart.

Wu used only one day to paint the landscape on the wall depicting the 300-kilometer-long scenery along the river. When it was finished, the emperor was awed by the brilliant painting. Wu said that when he was touring along the river, he didn't try to remember the details of a mountain or river. Instead, he tried very hard to feel the sensation of the beautiful scenes there.

Wu's death was a myth. One story says that after painting a mural about a natural scene in the palace one day, Wu drew a door on the mural in the side of a hill. Then he clapped his hands and the door opened. After entering, Wu invited the emperor to follow. But the door suddenly shut, he disappeared inside his own painting and was never seen again.

The narrator’s grandfather also looked like a hundred years old man in the portrait. He had a long white flowing beard. It came up to his chest. It looked as if he had lots and lots of grandchildren. Actually, he looked older than the grandmother.

The author’s grandmother was a highly religious lady. Her one hand was always busy in telling the beads of her rosary. Her lips constantly moved in an inaudible prayer. She used to get up early in the morning. She said her morning prayer in ‘a monotonous sing-song.’ The grandmother always went to school with the narrator because the school was attached to the temple. The grandmother would sit in the temple reading the scriptures.

The old lady was quite conservative. She didn’t like the new English school in the city. She was unhappy because there was no teaching about God and the scriptures at the city-school. She was quite disturbed. They gave music lessons at the English school. She considered music fit only for harlots and beggars. It was not meant for gentle folks.

The only time when she didn’t pray was the day when the narrator returned from abroad. It was quite an odd thing for her. But she more than compensated for this lapse. When she realised that her end was near, she stopped talking. She lay peacefully in bed praying and telling her beads. Her lips stopped moving and the rosary fell from her lifeless fingers.

The narrator's grandmother gave the impression of 'winter landscape in the mountains' because of her white hair and spotless clothes. The narrator's grandmother used to wear the clothes which would have no spots in them and her hair had turned all grey. In the story , “ The portrait of a lady” by Khushwant singh, the narrator compares his grandmother to a winter landscape in the mountains because both portray an expanse of pure white serenity breathing peace and contentment.

The narrator has used this comparison to convey the idea that he was the moderator, who had already got nine young men, like Ranga, married. It was now Ranga's turn to fall prey to his desire of having him married. Getting someone married by the narrator is equal to eating one lion by the narrator.

This story is set in the times when girls were married off really early, as soon as they reached puberty which could well be ten or eleven years of age. The story shows the picture of a society which considered marriage as the fundamental building block of society and girls as young as Ratna were married off early. This story neither advocates child marriage nor is child marriage at the center of the story, the main focus is on the picture of society as it was.

Gaurav Seth 5 years, 4 months ago

No, we should not promote child marriage because it is a crime. In this age they should get proper education, which is also our birth right.they are also listed in fundamental rights to give proper education to all the children in age group of 11-14.

Certainly ‘Ranga’s Marriage’ doesn’t present the changing face of the Indian village. No doubt, many Indian villages still share many superstitions and practices. But the scenario is changing fast. Hence, many incidents in the story seem to be exaggerated or outdated. It is true that many of the villagers still don’t have good understanding of English. Today if an educated youngman returns from a big city, people don’t rush to have a look of him. The homecoming of Ranga was a great event for the people of Hosahalli. But today it may be no news at all. Many youngmen go to the big towns and cities for higher education. These days English words like ‘change’ are quite common and the people don’t have any difficulty in understanding them.

Ratna of the story is a pretty girl. She is from a big town and knows how to play the veena and harmonium. But she is just eleven ! Who can even imagine to marry off a girl of eleven today? But the narrator thinks her to be the most suitable bride for Ranga. Today child marriages have been banned by the law. Even in the villages the marriage of a girl of eleven appears to be an exception rather than a rule.

It is true that even today villagers believe in astrologers like Shastri. ‘Arranged marriages’ are still very common. But not many village girls run inside overcome by shyness after seeing a stranger today. Things are changing fast but the story doesn’t present the changing face of the Indian village.
