The Instructor’s work was over when he built a swimmer out of Douglas piece by piece and then put them together into an integrated whole. However, Douglas was not satisfied as the remnants of the old terror would return when he swam alone in the pool. He would frown on terror go for another length of the pool.

The thought of Roosevelt that there is terror in the fear of death had deep impact on Douglas. He had experienced both the sensation of dying and the terror of the fear of death. But later he brushed aside his fear by challenging it by the will to live and succeeded.

William Douglas had been a hydrophobic after meeting with two misadventures in his life especially the latter one wherein he was thrown into the deep end of the YMCA pool by a big bully. In order to overcome his fear of water, he hired a personal instructor who put a belt around his waist that was connected to rope and ran on an overhead cable through a pulley straight into the hands of instructor. When Douglas was about to drown, instructor would pull the rope which made Douglas come to the surface of the water. When he swam confidently, he would loosen the rope to let him free. This went on for few months and Douglas got to learn a lot with the help of his instructor. Besides, he learnt side stroke, breast stroke, paddling, inhaling and exhaling which made him more confident in water.

When Douglas was thrown into water, he landed in a sitting position, swallowed water, and went at once to the bottom. He was frightened, but while going downwards in the water he planned that when his feet hit the bottom, he would make a big jump, come to the surface, lie flat on it, and paddle to the edge of the pool) But, it was not as simple as he had imagined. His repeated attempts to come out failed him till he became unconscious and was pulled out of the pool. The author was first frightened, but not scared out of his wits, as he felt he could jump upwards and paddle to the edge of the pool(when he failed to do so, he was seized by sheer terror)that knew no understanding, no control. Then came a touch of reason—to remember to jump. When the jump made no difference he was seized by stark terror even more firmly. Finally, he relaxed and slipped into oblivion.

The poem is a tribute to the poet’s mother. She is looking at an old photograph of her mother which has a frame of cardboard. The picture has three girls in which the middle one is the oldest and tallest.
It is her mother when she was twelve years old or so. Beside her, on both sides are her two cousins, Betty and Dolly, who are holding her hands and are younger than her. They went for paddling on a beach holiday. Her uncle took the photograph then. The poet could not help but notice her mother’s sweet face. The sea touched her terribly transient feet which depicted that she changed over the years and the sea remained the same.
After twenty-thirty years, her mother would laugh at the photograph. She would make the poet look at the photograph and tell her how their parents would dress them up for the beach holiday. The beach holiday was her mother’s favourite past memories while her laugh was the poet's favourite memory. Both of them lost something which they cherished a lot and yet cannot live that moment again.
Those sweet moments were memories now.
Now, the poet’s mother had been dead for the past twelve years, which is the same number as of her age when the photograph was taken back then. She cannot express the grief that she has from her mother’s absence.

Mr Crocker-Harris appears as a stem master who is a man of principles and stickler to the rules. He believes in fair assessment of his students and is not swayed by emotions, as the man is hardly human. He is not a sadist, but strict in performance of his duties. He is a man of strict behavior, rules, and principle. He gives priorities to his work rather than thinking about the views of the people. He gives a fair evaluation of his students and never steps backward while performing his duties. Even on his last day at school, when he is over-busy in his own affairs, he does not neglect his duty towards his students.

In the story “The Portrait of a Lady” the author draws a very beautiful portrait of his grandmother. He spent his childhood with his grandmother in a village. She was not adapted to the modern lifestyles. She was her grandson’s bosom friend. The author says that she was like any other grandmother –old, short, fat, white haired, with wrinkled skin, back stooped with age, loving, caring and above all deeply spiritual. He heard people saying that she was very beautiful in her younger days. However, she was all same from the time he has seen her. She used to walk around the house putting one hand in her back and counting the beads in her rosary in the other. The author said that his dead grandfather’s look did not match his grandmother’s beauty. The author’s grandmother was a strong-willed woman. She not only took care of herself but also her grandson. She used to take him to school, which was attached to a temple. While the author was attending his class, she used to read books in the temple. She helped him in his studies also. She was disposed towards charity. She not only fed animals and birds, but she also loved them. Other than his grandson, they were her company. She did not love music as she considered it was for harlots and beggars. She was a lady of less words and more work.

Wing A, Flat 3,
Belvedere Estate,

December 4, 2010.
The Deputy Commissioner,
Kolkata Police (Traffic),
18, Lalbazar Street,
Kolkata – 700 001.
Subject: Chaotic traffic in the area
Respected Sir,
This letter intends to bring to your kind attention the unimaginable harassment that the people are facing around my school, due to the growing instances of traffic jams. We know that the number of vehicles on the roads is on the rise and that there is no proportional increase in the number of roads. So, traffic jams are bound to happen. But I do not intend to disturb you with things that do not have an immediate solution.
It stretches one’s tolerance to the ultimate limit when a difficult situation is aggravated due to the irresponsible behaviour of a few rogue drivers. The Buses and autos on this busy road show an appalling disregard for any kind of traffic law. Buses stopping here and there, autos coming and going through and into every corner and side of the traffic imaginable, drivers getting into an ugly argument on the middle of the road etc., cause havoc for the daily commuter. Also, it's a school zone, so it is even more dangerous for us students who walk in this area.
Auto drivers are presumably above the law for no police officer seems to have the courage of taking them to task because of their strong union. Please do not mind my mentioning the passivity of the police officers posted in the area. Some of the leading newspapers in the area yesterday published photographs of a police officer and a constable smoking (despite the Supreme Court ban) on the Alipore Road even while the traffic was in the doldrums. Need I say more?
It seems that the concerned officers respond to the call of duty only when some minister is using a particular road. I hope you do not construe my helplessness as rudeness.
The most difficult hours during the day are in the morning, when we go to school, and in the evening, when we are returning back home. There are a total of four schools in my area, and this makes the traffic even worse. This is due to the private vehicles that are used to drop us and pick us up from school. I suggest that measures are taken to create an awareness against the usage of private vehicles. Personally, I walk up to school because I live only five minutes away, but, the roads are more dangerous for us pedestrians as there are drivers who try to ride their scooters from every possible space available on the road as well as footpath.
I suggest that a diversion be created along the road that leads to the school, this would make the road a bit safer to walk on. I also suggest that a traffic inspector is assigned to manage the traffic, as the absence of one creates a complete chaos every day on the road.
We have faith in the Police Department and fully understand that there are some dedicated officers who are working day and night to ensure our safety in every sphere. With all due respect to them, I believe that the Police Department needs to pull up its socks to combat the menace of nuisance drivers who aggravate the problem of traffic jams in our city.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Yours sincerely,
Name

The grandmother was used to the life of the village. She got up early in the morning. She woke up her grandson and got him ready for school. She was very much concerned about the education of the narrator. She accompanied him to his school. She sat in the temple reading the scriptures. She was friendly even to the village dogs and fed them regularly.

A natural disaster is a major event resulting from natural processes of the Earth. It causes a great loss of life and property. During such disasters, the number of people who are rendered, trippled and houseless is more than the number of people who loose their lives. Even the economy of the peace which faces a natural disaster, gets effected.
It is true that a natural disaster is a natural process and we cannot stop it but by making certain preparations, we can reduce the magnitude of the loss to life and property. First of all we should reduce global warming which is the root cause of all the problems. We should also have insurance policies so that we could have sufficient money to rebuilt our lives after any such disaster. The scientists should invent advance warming systems. While construction we should make sure that it is strong enough to withstand earthquakes. We should educate people about evacuation during any disaster.

In the poem 'Photograph', the sea represents timelessness. The poet says that the sea '... appears to have changed less'. The sea is an element of nature where time has little or almost no influence. Sea voyage is a wonderful experience. It sometimes shows that life is like a challenge that a person should face. In that lesson author along with family had determination and courage to face any kind of problems.
