All tears come out of tear glands, or lacrimal (say: LAH-krum-ul) glands, found way up under your upper eyelids. Tears wash down from the glands and over your eyes. Some of the tears drain out of your eyes through tear ducts, or lacrimal ducts. These ducts are tiny tubes that run between your eyes and your nose. Your tears are produced by lacrimal glands located above your eyes. Tears spread across the surface of the eye when you blink. They then drain into small holes in the corners of your upper and lower lids before traveling through small channels and down your tear ducts to your nose.

According to Taplow, Mr. Crocker Harris was a strict disciplinarian. Students were afraid that any misconduct might affect their grades. From Taplow's dialogue we also get to know that Mr. Crocker Harris was a man who strictly adhered to the rules of the school much unlike the other teachers. He never disclosed the results till it was announced by the headmaster. However, Taplow liked Mr.Crocker Harris as he believed that the man was not a sadist. He felt pity for Mr. Crocker Harris and described him as 'shrivelled up inside'.

The system of old British schools as reflected by the story shows that the system was quite formal and conservative in nature. The teachers did not have a very good rapport with the students with the stress being more on keeping a respectable distance between the two rather than a friendly approach. Classical learning was encouraged more than the sciences which were still in its infancy. Teachers like Crocker-Harris commanded immense respect from students even though his teaching methods were set apart from the rest. Students were expected to be at their best at all times and work hard without expectations of being favoured. The student-teacher relationship was one of respect but with young teachers coming into the picture, things would probably change towards a more interactive process.

According to Taplow,Mr. crocker harris is an ideal teacher. He follow all the rules of school, that others do not and he is a great teacher who is not a sadist(one who punishes children without any reason) and he strongly dislike persons who appreciates him. These makesTaplow afraid of Mr.crocker harris.

Mr. Crocker Harris was different because he did not show his love towards his students. Other teachers wanted to remain good in thoughts of their students but Mr crocker did not do it. His behavior was rude towards them but he always thought about welfare of his students. Other teachers did not follow the rules of school but Mr crocker always follow the rules and wanted to make their students honest. In this way he was different.

Taplow mimicked Mr. Harris because while narrating an incident to Mr. Frank, the science teacher, he got emotionally carried away and did Mr. Crocker Harris’s mimicry. Mr. Frank liked this mimicry so much that he asked Taplow to do it once more; Taplow did it again. So, Taplow had to mimic Mr. Crocker Harris.

According to the narrator, young people in the village are ignoring their mother tongue Kannada and speaking in English, which is a disgraceful event. Rama Rao's son speaks in English to the old woman selling firewood. She does not understand his words and goes away muttering abuses for wasting her time. The narrator refers to Ranga's courtyard as the Black Hole of Calcutta because the teeming masses had congested that small space into a similar sort of structure where more and more people seemed to be swallowed up as they went in. The Black Hole of Calcutta was a dungeon in the old Fort of William of Calcutta where British prisoners of war were held captive by the nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah. The inhabitants had to live in close quarters, crammed together in a small space. The situation was similar in Ranga's courtyard which had witnessed a huge turnout due to the arrival of the accountant's son from the city.

Ten years ago, the English language was not very popular in the village. People hardly knew how to speak in English. Only, Ranga's father had the courage to send his son to Bangalore to study. This was therefore a great event.

The title of the story is quite appropriate and suggestive. It at once sums up the theme of the story. The whole story has one central issue Ranga’s marriage. It begins with Ranga’s refusal to marry just then and ends with his blissful married life. All the incidents contribute to the central theme.
The writer has presented the working of a young educated Indian’s mind and heart. He is easily influenced by the English way of life and customs. He wants to adopt them in his own life as well. The narrator, who is his well-wisher takes deep interest in him and takes active steps to wean Ranga away from the fantasy of love-marriage. By arousing his interest and fascination in a young girl, Ratna, he makes Ranga agree to marry her. Thus Ranga’s one condition for marriage is fulfilled—he knows the girl and loves her. She does not fulfil the other condition of being a mature girl in twenties—she is just eleven at that time.
