Shyama is the narrator of the story, "Ranga's Marriage". He is an old and experienced man, who has more faith in traditional beliefs than Ranga's modern notions. He manipulates Ranga in such a manner that he ends up marrying Ratna, an eleven year old girl, in spite of his notions about marriage . However, the manipulation is done in such a manner that Ranga marries Ratna out of his own free will. Nevertheless, Shyama should not be thought of as a meddlesome fellow. His actions are for the best of both Ranga and Ratna. In his heart he has only love for both of them. Shyama is also an intelligent man, who has great knowledge of human nature and is almost a psychiatrist in his own right.

He returned the horse because he the actual owner of the horse, John Byro had seen him and Aram, his younger brother riding the horse one morning. Though he trusted their honesty and integrity, yet the three of them knew what the truth was. Mourad must have felt conscience-stricken and before the matter reached the elders of his family, her returned the horse.

In the Portrait of a Lady, Khushwant Singh describes his grandfather from the latter’s portrait that hung above the mantelpiece in the drawing room. His grandfather is seen wearing a big turban and loose-fitting clothes in the portrait. His long, white beard covered the best part of his chest and he looked at least a hundred years old. Khushwant Singh also goes on to say that his grandfather did not look the sort of person who would have a wife or children. He looked as if he could only have lots and lots of grandchildren.
