Mrs Dorling is an important character of Marga Minco’s short story The Address’. She is introduced to us as the mother of a fifteen-year old daughter. Like her daughter, Mrs Dorling has a ‘broad back’. When the narrator rings the bell, Mrs Dorling appears wearing the green knitted cardigan of the narrator’s mother. This shows how mercilessly she is using all ‘nice things’ of Mrs S.

Mrs Dorling’s behaviour towards Mrs S’ daughter is quite cold, unfriendly and inhuman. When the narrator introduces herself as the daughter of Mrs S, Mrs Dorling shows no sign of affection. Her remarks are very shocking and uncharitable. She utters : “Have you come back ?” She is not at all pleased to receive the daughter of Mrs S. She doesn’t feel “convenient”. She very coldly asks her to come “another time”.

Mrs Dorling lacks human qualities of head and heart. She is selfish. She is rude and ill mannered. She also lacks good sense and decency. She only knows how to exploit people and situations to her own advantage. She exploits Mrs S’s fear for war. She walks away with all her ‘nice things’ to 46, Marconi Street. She makes no effort to return them when the narrator visits her.

The address is to forget the address

Gaurav Seth 5 years, 2 months ago

Margo Minco has very aptly and logically titled this short story ‘The Address’. The narrator and her mother were victims of the war. The upheaval forced them to be wanderers. They had no permanent address worth the name. All the ‘nice things’ were at No. 46, Marconi Street. They aroused nostalgic feelings of former times. But their true owner was no more in the world. The narrator resolved to forget them and also the address where they lay.

What happens to the laburnum tree after the goldfinch flies away?

Ans. After singing, the goldfinch flies away into the infinite. The laburnum tree becomes silent and quiet again. Emptiness comes to it and it becomes as dead (silent) as it was earlier.

It all begins when Ranga, the accountant’s son comes back to his village Hosahalli after six months. He had gone to Bangalore to pursue his studies, which to mention, not many in the village get this opportunity. The whole village gets excited to see Ranga and thus, they gather around his home only to see how he would have changed. The narrator has beautifully elaborated about their village Hosahalli and how every authority responsible forgot to mention it in the maps. Moving on, he admires Ranga and wants to get him married but to his dismay, Ranga has very different views about marriage at that point. The Narrator stages the entire union of Ranga and Ratna, Rama Rao’s eleven year old niece. The girl has a very sweet voice and can play Veena and harmonium. At first, the narrator tells him that she is married to see how it affects Ranga. As expected, Ranga was disappointed. The narrator then manipulated the village Shastri to say things in his favour. He then took Ranga to visit him where he predicted that Ranga has a girl on his mind and her name resembles something found in the ocean. Shyama, the narrator guesses her name to be Ratna but again, she is married. On their way back, they confirmed that Ratna is not married only to find Ranga happy and full of hope. On the other hand, the Shastri disagreed on having staged anything predetermined. He claims to have said whatever his predictions showed. However, at the end, Ranga and Ratna are happily married with a three- year old son named after the narrator. Ratna is also pregnant with another child. To conclude, the narrator makes sure that he didn’t bore his readers.

The creator made an exceptionally expound plan to get Ranga wedded to Ratna. As a matter of first importance, he astutely arranged their gathering at his own home. Also, he took his companion, the Shastri into his certainty and educated him to do and say certain things to Ranga. The arrangement clicked.

We plant trees in plantations for  various reasons, including maintaining water sources, upgrading soil quality, improving climate, supplying construction timber and wood energy, providing shelter for livestock, and furthermore, for social advantages, cultural and traditional conservation and for beautifying the landscape.Tree planting along the boundary  of large fields and the homestead is useful for strong live fences, windbreaks, wood energy and other complementary products such as fodder.Planting trees along the road provides various advantages such as shade, beautification of the landscape, a good and clean climate, prevention of soil erosion, drainage, prevention of dust from flying onto people houses, and providing wood for various use.Planting trees in public places,  such as hospitals,  schools, pagodas and public gardens provides particular advantages such  as shade and beauty,  which is very beneficial to all people.Forest cover can help prevent  erosion, and the roots of trees growing along waterways  are useful for holding and preventing the banks from collapsing. Waterways with no trees or plants growing on their banks suffer from high levels of soil erosion, which in the long run  will widely deplete the cultivable and residential land. Therefore, there should be urgent measures for tree planting to protect the area from  soil erosionThis increases the amount of fodder for raising animals. Fodder trees are fast growing on  all types of land, they  tolerate arid soil, are easy to plant, and highly productive. More significantly, planted fodder trees can be advantageous for fencing and beautifying the homestead. Strong winds, storms and floods more often devastate open areas than forests. Storms or floods do not only destroy infrastructure and houses but they also destroy agricultural products. The most successful approach for prevention is to plant trees as barriers.

The story 'The Address' is about an address that the author had been given by her deceased mother to go to and reclaim her belongings. The address Mrs Dorling, 46, Marconi Street is the nucleus of the story around which the entire plot develops. The author goes there; but she is not entertained encouragingly; she goes back; and again comes back to the same address. So the title is quite appropriately justified.

The grandmother looked extremely old. She was fat and slightly bent. Her face was a criss-cross of wrinkles. She couldn’t have grown older any more. She looked the same terribly old lady for the last twenty years. The narrator had never seen her being young or pretty. She always looked ‘terribly old’.
