The group 13 elements consist of six elements. They are boron (B), aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), Indium (In), thallium (Tl), and element 113.
We find boron in limited quantities. It is mostly a product of the barrage of subatomic particles created from characteristic radioactivity. Aluminium is readily available on our planet. It is also the third most copious element in the Earth’s outside (8.3%).
We can find Gallium in the earth with a wealth of 13 parts per molecule. Indium is the 61st richest element in the world’s covering. Thallium is scattered in small amounts all over the planet. Ununtrium is not available naturally and thus, has been named a synthetic element.

Since this monoatomic anion contains 45 neutrons and 35 electrons, this means that the neutral atom contains 34 electrons. As in an atom the number of protons are equal to the number of electrons, therefore the number of protons in the atom are also 34. Thus the mass number of the atom is 45 + 34 = 79.

Step 1. Make use of the chemical formula to determine the number of atoms of each element in the compound.
Step 2. Multiply the atomic weight of each element with its number of atoms present in the compound.
Step 3. Add up all and assign unit as grams/mole.
Example :
Identify the molar mass of calcium nitrate, Ca(NO3)2 ?
Solution: Since calcium nitrate contains one atom of calcium, two atoms of nitrogen and six atoms of oxygen.
Ca: 1 x 40.1 = 40.1
N: 2 x 14.0 = 28
O: 6 x 16.0 = 96
If we add all, 40.1 + 14 + 16 = 164.1
Therefore, the molar mass of Ca(NO3)2 is 164.1 g/mol.

- The empirical formula is the simplest formula for a compound which is defined as the ratio of subscripts of the smallest possible whole number of the elements present in the formula. It is also known as the simplest formula.
- An empirical formula for a compound is the formula of a substance written with the smallest integer subscript.
- The empirical formula gives information about the ratio of numbers of atoms in the compound. The percent composition of a compound directly leads to its empirical formula.

Empirical Formula for Molecular formula
- An empirical formula represents the simplest whole number ratio of various atoms present in a compound.
- Molecular formula shows the exact number of different types of atoms present in a molecule of a compound.
- If the mass percent of various elements present in a compound is known, then its empirical formula can be determined.
- Molecular formula can further be obtained if the molar mass is known.

Molecular mass / WEIGHT
The molecular mass of a substance is the number of times the molecule of the substance is heavier than one twelfth the mass of an atom of carbon -12. or The molecular mass is equal to sum of its atomic masses of all the atoms present in one molecule of substance. For Example : Mass of H= 1 u Atomic mass of O =16 u Molecular mass of water =2 × atomic mass of H+1 × atomic mass of O =2 × 1 + 16 × 1 = 18 u

The e/m ratio for cathode rays is constant. It is equal to 1.76×10 8 C/g. It is independent of the nature of gas in discharge tube and nature of cathode or electrodes of tube. This shows that an electron is a universal fundamental particle.

William Crookes in 1879 demonstrated that cathode rays travel in straight lines. He placed an opaque object like metal cross in the path of cathode rays in a discharge tube. It was observed that a sharp shadow of the cross was cast on the glass behind the cross. A shadow of metal cross under the circumstances can be formed only if cathode rays travel in straight lines and cannot bend round the corners of the metal cross.
