The strength of a bond depends on upon the extent of overlapping. A sigma bond stronger than a pi bond. The reason behind this is the orientation of the overlapped orbitals. Sigma bonds result from head-on(co-axial) overlapping while pi bonds are the outcome of lateral(para-axial) overlapping.
The greater the extent of overlapping, the higher the probability of finding the valence electrons in between the nuclei and hence the bond will be stronger.

Aditesh Singh 7 years, 2 months ago

Because in sigma bond overlapping is quite large as compaired to pi bond

As we goes down the group the number of shell increases and because of increase of number of Shell the atomic radius increases.

Priya Dharshini ☺☺ 7 years, 2 months ago

The number of energy levels increases as you move down a group as the number of electrons increases. Each subsequent energy level is further from the nucleus than the last. Therefore, the atomic radius increases as the group and energy levels increase.

Anurag Mishra 7 years, 2 months ago

Because the number of shells increases.
