The following table illustrates different steps followed in determination of empirical formula of an oxide of iron using the given data -

<th scope="row">Element</th> <th scope="col">Symbol</th> <th scope="col">% by mass</th> <th scope="col">Atomic mass</th> <th scope="col">Mols of the element
Fe 69.9 55.85 {tex} \frac{69.9}{55.85}{/tex}= 1.25 {tex}\frac{1.25}{1.25}{/tex}= 1 2
O 30.1 16.00 {tex}\frac{30.1}{16.00}{/tex}= 1.88 {tex}\frac{1.88}{1.25}{/tex}= 1.5 3

Thus it is concluded that the oxide contains -
2 atoms of Fe
&, 3 atoms of O
hence, the ratio of atoms  in  the oxide of iron
= 2 : 3
{tex}\therefore{/tex} Empirical formula - Fe2O3

Electron volt, unit of energy commonly used in atomic and nucleus physics, equal to the energy gained by an electron (a charged particle carrying unit electronic charged) when the electrial patented of the electron increases by one volt. The electron volt equal 1.602*10ki power -12 erg, or 1.602*10 ki power -19 joule.
