इटली का एकीकरण
इटली का भी राजनैतिक अलगाव और विघटन का एक लंबा इतिहास रहा है। इटली में एक तरफ तो बहुराष्ट्रीय हैब्सबर्ग साम्राज्य का शासन था तो दूसरी ओर कुछ हिस्सों में कई छोटे-छोटे राज्य थे। उन्नीसवीं सदी के मध्य में इटली सात प्रांतों में बँटा हुआ था। उनमें से एक; सार्डिनिया-पिडमॉंट पर किसी इटालियन राजपरिवार का शासन था। उत्तरी भाग ऑस्ट्रिया के हैब्सबर्ग साम्राज्य के नियंत्रण में था, मध्य भाग पोप के शासन में और दक्षिणी भाग स्पेन के बोर्बोन राजाओं के नियंत्रण में था। इटालियन भाषा का कोई एक स्वरूप अभी तक नहीं बन पाया था और इस भाषा के कई क्षेत्रीय और स्थानीय प्रारूप थे।
1830 के दशक में जिउसेपे मेत्सीनी ने एक समग्र इटालियन गणराज्य की स्थापना के लिए एक योजना बनाई। लेकिन 1831 और 1848 के विद्रोहों की विफलता के बाद अब इसकी जिम्मेदारी सार्डिनिया पिडमॉंट और इसके शासक विक्टर इमैन्युएल द्वितीय पर आ गई थी। उस क्षेत्र के शासक वर्ग को लगने लगा था कि इटली के एकीकरण से आर्थिक विकास तेजी से होगा।
<hr />इटली के विभिन्न क्षेत्रों को एक करने के आंदोलन की अगुवाई मुख्यमंत्री कैवर ने की थी। वह ना तो कोई क्रांतिकारी था ना ही कोई प्रजातांत्रिक व्यक्ति। वह तो इटली के उन धनी और पढ़े लिखे लोगों में से था जिनकी संख्या काफी थी। उसे भी इटालियन से ज्यादा फ्रेंच भाषा पर महारत थी। उसने फ्रांस से एक कूटनीतिक गठबंधन किया और इसलिए 1859 में ऑस्ट्रिया की सेना को हराने में कामयाब हो गया। उस लड़ाई में सेना के जवानों के अलावा, कई सशस्त्र स्वयंसेवकों ने भी भाग लिया था जिनकी अगुवाई जिउसेपे गैरीबाल्डी कर रहा था। 1860 के मार्च महीने में वे दक्षिण इटली और टू सिसली के राज्य की ओर बढ़ चले। उन्होंने स्थानीय किसानों का समर्थन जीत लिया और फिर स्पैनिश शासकों को उखाड़ फेंकने में कामयाब हो गए। 1861 में विक्टर इमैंयुएल (द्वितीय) को एक समग्र इटली का राजा घोषित किया गया। लेकिन इटली के आम जन का एक बहुत बड़ा भाग इस उदारवादी-राष्ट्रवादी विचारधारा से बिल्कुल अनभिज्ञ था। ऐसा शायद उनमें फैली हुई अशिक्षा के कारण था।
