The Northern plains are an important physiological feature of India.
They have the following features-
1. It has an area of about 70000 sq.km. The plains are nearly 2400 km long and 240 - 320 km in breadth.
2. Composed of Alluvial soil and a highly agriculturally productive area.
Main crops grown here are mostly paddy and wheat.
3. This plain is crossed with three major rivers - the Ganges, the Indus and the Brahmaputra.
4. It's divided into four parts due to relief differences - Bhabar , Terai , Bhangar and Khadar.
5. Due to favorable climatic conditions and other socio- economic factors , the Northern Plain is a very densely populated.

विकास
अलग अलग लोगों के लिये विकास के अलग लक्ष्य होते हैं। जो बात किसी एक व्यक्ति के लिये विकास हो सकती है वह किसी दूसरे के लिये भी विकास हो यह जरूरी नहीं। उदाहरण के लिये किसी डैम का निर्माण एक उद्योगपति के लिये विकास हो सकता है लेकिन वही डैम उन लोगों के लिये विनाशकारी साबित होता है जिन्हें उस डैम के कैचमेंट एरिया से निष्कासित किया जाता है।
अलग अलग लोगों के लिये विकास की अलग अलग जरूरतें होती हैं। वे जरूरतें उस व्यक्ति की जिंदगी की परिस्थिति के अनुसार होती है। उदाहरण के लिये किसी दूर दराज के गाँव में रहने वाले आदमी के लिये पक्की सड़क का बनना विकास हो सकता है। वहीं दूसरी ओर, दिल्ली या मुम्बई में रहने वाले किसी आदमी के लिये मेट्रो रेल या एक्सप्रेसवे का बनना विकास हो सकता है।
इस तरह से विकास के ऐसे लक्ष्य की जरूरत पड़ती है जिससे अधिक से अधिक लोगों को फायदा पहुँच सके।
