The acronym SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging.
Sonar is a device that uses ultrasonic waves to measure the distance, direction and speed of underwater objects.
Principle: It uses the phenomenon of echoes in determining the sea-depth and locating the presence of under-water objects.
Working:
i) Sonar consists of a transmitter and a detector and is installed in a boat or a ship.
ii) The transmitter produces and transmits strong ultrasonic waves.
iii) These waves travel through the water and after striking the object the beam is reflected from the seabed and is received by an under-water detector which is also mounted on the ship.
iv) The detector converts the ultrasonic waves into electrical signals which are appropriately interpreted.
v) The time interval between transmission and reception of the ultrasonic signal is noted.
The SONAR method is also called echo ranging. This technique is used to determine the depth of the sea and to locate underwater hills, valleys, submarine, icebergs, sunken ship etc.

A ------ 0.50 m -------- B -------- 0.50 -------- C
Ma = 0.100 kg Mb = 0.200 kg Mc = 0.300 kg
Net gravitational force Fa on A is towards right side.
Fa = G Ma Mb / 0.50² + G Ma Mc / 1.0²
= 6.67 * 10⁻¹¹ * 0.100 [ 0.200/ 0.50² + 0.300 /1 ] N
= 7.34 * 10⁻¹² N
Net gravitational force Fc on C is towards B, left side and its magnitude is equal to Fa ie., 7.34 * 10⁻¹² N
Net gravitational force on B is Fb & is towards C
Fb = G Mb [ Mc - Ma ]/ 0.50²
= 6.67 * 10⁻¹¹ * 0.200 * 0.200 * 4 = 1.07 * 10⁻¹¹ N

Theory
Starch forms a lyophilic sol when water is used as the dispersion medium. The formation of sol is accelerated by heating. The starch sol can be prepared by heating starch and water at about 100°C. It is quite stable and is not affected by the presence of any electrolytic impurity.
Apparatus
Beakers (250 ml and 50 ml), glass rod, funnel, filter-paper, pestle and mortar, tripod stand, wire-gauze and burner.
Materials Required
Soluble starch (500 mg) and distilled water.
Procedure
- Take 500 mg of starch in a mortar and add few ml of distilled water.
- Grind the starch to make a thin paste and transfer this paste to a 50 ml beaker.
- Take about 100 ml of distilled water in a 250 ml beaker and heat the beaker so that water starts boiling.
- Pour the paste slowly with stirring into boiling water in the beaker (Fig. 2.1).
- Continue boiling for about 10 minutes and there allow the beaker to cool.
- Filter the contents of the beaker through a filter-paper, fixed in a funnel.
Label the filtrate ‘Starch Sol’.

Precautions
- The apparatus used for preparing sol should be properly cleaned.
- Distilled water should be used for preparing sols in water.
- Starch should be converted into a fine paste before adding to boiling water.
- Starch paste should be added in a thin stream to boiling water.
- Constant stirring of the contents is necessary during the preparation of the sol.

Distillation is used for the separation of components of a mixture containing two miscible liquids which boil without decomposition and have a sufficient difference in their boiling points. Whereas fractional distillation is used for the separation of a mixture containing two miscible liquids, for which the difference in their boiling points is less than 25o C.
