Basically   l’imparfait (French imperfect Tense) is a descriptive past tense  which indicates an ongoing state of being or a repeated or incomplete action. L’imparfait is very often translated in English as "was/were , was/were +  -ing.”  It is very important to understand that where  and when we should use <L’Imparfait>. This tense is used when-

  1. Expressing continuing actions of Past
  2. Expressing habits or  repeated actions of  Past
  3. Describing and expressing opinions of  Past
  4. Beginning and end of action is not indicated

Imparfait is used as a past tense (referring to events in the past ) to -

 

1. describe events in the past .. for example, I went to Paris , it was magnificent.

Je suis allé à paris , c’était magnifique.

Imaparfait is used to highlight that the city was magnificent. (description)

Imparfait is also used to highlight habitude in the past. example -

During summers, I used to swim in the local swimming pool.

Pendant les étés, je faisais la natation dans la piscine locale.(Swimming is a regular activity or habit that I did in summers.)
