ARTICLE WRITING
An article should be like a conversation with the reader. It is an expression of one’s thought on an issue or a subject logically and coherently written in meaningful paragraphs. An article writing needs good research skills, creativity, good vocabulary, good knowledge of the subject and skill to organize ideas.
Purpose
To focus on themes like social concern, narrating an event, description of a place, explain a simple idea, etc.
Format
I Para: Introduction -Start with a slogan, a question, an amazing fact, figure or statement. II/III Para: Content -Causes, effects, present state of affairs, etc. IV Para: Conclusion -Draw solutions and conclusions |
POINTS TO REMEMBER
- Give a title that catches the attention of the reader.
- Begin with a striking opening sentence which addresses the readers and gets them interested in the topic
- Text can be written using sub headings. It helps to bring clarity to the paragraphs.
- Present a strong argument for your ideas supporting it with evidences or elaboration.
- Use linking devices (however, therefore, although, even though, in order to…) to make the composition appear a whole.
- Introduce a new point at the beginning of an each paragraph that follows, to strengthen your ideas.
- Develop your ideas as much as you can to make them interesting and substantial.
- Conclude with your strongest point. Perhaps give the reader something to think about either by asking another question or by asking to act upon.
- Use passive voice, humor, emotive language, rhetorical questions, real life or made up examples to provide a specific effect.
- Use semi formal or conversational tone.
THINGS TO AVOID
- Avoid too formal language and words like: to sum up, some people say, nevertheless, on one hand etc.
- Avoid too many questions.

The poem is based on the theme that greed is a grave sin. Greedy people do not deserve the blessings and the comforts of human life. Human beings should thus acquire qualities of kindness, fellow-feeling and empathy. The little woman’s greed stopped her from sharing even her smallest cake with hungry Saint Peter, thus earning his wrath.
