The lost child loses interest in the things that he had wanted earlier because he was panic stricken on being separated from his parents. All he wanted was to be united with them. All the things that attracted him in the fair no longer tempted him and now the only thing that mattered was finding his parents

In the short story 'The Little Girl' by Katherine Mansfield, the little girl, Kezia, started making the pin-cushion as a gift for her father for his birthday the following week. Kezia's grandmother had suggested that she make a pin-cushion for him from a piece of beautiful yellow silk. She thought that her father would appreciate her kind gesture. She stuffed the pin-cushion with some important papers that contained her father's speech.

The intruder wants to kill Gerrard in order to take on his identity to elude the police.
The intruder found that he somehow looked alike Gerrard.
Also he had the idea that Gerrard hardly meet any outsiders.
All these clues inspired him to take on his identity so that he can disguised permanently as Gerrard.

The duck praises the kangaroo,so as to have a ride on his back! Another reason was,that the Duck was tired of confining himself ito the nasty pond.He was amazed to see that the Kangaroo was hopping gracefully to many unseen places of the world.That's the reason he praised the Kangaroo.
