Johnsy’s character in the story ‘Last Leaf’ by O. Henry is quite interesting. She is Sue’s friend and lives with her in an apartment in Greenwich Village. She falls ill suffering from pneumonia and gradually loses will to live. She harbors a belief that she will die the moment the last leaf falls from the ivy climber on the wall opposite her window. She also shares her belief with her friend who confides it to Mr. Behrman. However, he paints an ivy leaf on the wall, which looks real. When Johnsy sees the last leaf has not fallen, she is healed with power of self-belief and love for life.

Sue is a young budding artist. She is struggling to prove her painting skills. She was a positive girl and was very optimistic about her goal. She was supportive as she was hope of enlightenment to Johnsy her friend. She was sacrificing also. She devoted all her time to her friend's well being patiently. She was altogether persistent young girl having high aspirations

In the night, a very bad storm comes and wind the wind is howling and the rain is splattering against the window. Sue closes the curtains and tells Johnsy to go to sleep, even though there was still one leaf left on the vine. Johnsy protests but Sue insists on doing so because she doesn’t want Johnsy to see the last leaf fall. In the morning, Johnsy wants to see the vine to be sure that all the leaves are gone, but to their surprise, there is still one leaf left. She regains her will to live and makes a full recovery throughout the day.

In the afternoon, doctor talks to Sue. Behrman painted a masterpiece; he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell. Unfortunately, he dies after his attempt to paint his masterpiece. He sacrifices his life for saving Johnsy's life.
