The professor worked hard. He borrowed training manuals and stayed up late at night reading them. He troubled the instructions with questions. He drilled with enthusiasm. He was extremely tireless during marches. He lectured to his colleagues on aspect of human knowledge. Whenever any of the squad made a mistake, the Professor corrected him publicly. He always behaved in a way as if he were superior to others.
One day Corporal Turnbull was lecturing that the outside of a grenade was divided up into a large number of fragments. Even before he could complete his sentence, Private Quelch spoke out that the grenade is divided into forty four segments. The Corporal did not like cutting between his lecture. However, he said nothing and resumed speaking. On the other hand, the Professor spoke out again asking the Corporal if he should not have se started his lecture by first explaining the five characteristics of grenade. Everybody was thunder-struck.
Everybody thought that Private Quelch was going to be promoted. Private Quelch stood with an expression of self-conscious innocence. However everyone was greatly surprised when the Corporal said that one of them had to be nominated for permanent cookhouse duties. He had decided that Private Quelch was the just man for the job. It was a joke for days afternoon, and joy to all. Private Quelch, true to his nature, continued to interfere with the work of the cooks also.
Hope this helps u alot!
