The Indigo revolt was a peasant movement in the state of Bengal. The indigo farmers revolted against the atrocities of the indigo planters which were mainly Europeans. The indigo farmers according to the contract signed with the planters, grew indigo crop on extremely fertile piece of their land. They were paid extremely low prices for their crop. Hence, the indigo farmers rose in revolt against the indigo planters. In March 1859, the farmers refused to sow a single seedling of the indigo plant. Gradually, it spread to several districts in Bengal. The revolt of the indigo planters forced the government to appoint the “Indigo Commission “in 1860. In the Commission report, E.W.L Tower noted that that “not a chest of indigo reached England without being stained with human blood”. The Indigo commission was appointed which held the planters guilty, and criticized them for the coercive methods they used with indigo cultivators. The company asked ryots (farmers) to fulfill their existing contracts but also told them that they could refuse to produce indigo in future. This was a big relief for the peasants and gradually the plantations of Indigo came to an end in Bengal.

Igneous rocks rocks are referred to as the primary rocks, because they represent the rocks which directly or indirectly provided materials for the formation of other types of rocks. Magma erupts from volcanic eruptions and on reaching earths crust it is called lava and solidifies by cooling. Thus, cooling and solidification are the two distinct processes involved in the formation of igneous rocks. In rock cycle the first rock that is formed is igneous rocks from them sedimentary rocks are formed and after that metamorphic rocks formed.

The four basic activities of lumbering are:
- Felling: The first step is the felling or cutting of trees. Trees are first selected for felling. The high riggers who cut the trees climb up the trees. They wear spiked boots and safety belts which are connected to the trees in order to ensure their safety. After they reach the top of the tree, they begin the process of felling the trees. Axes have now replaced electrical saws which has made the process of cutting the trees much easier.
- Limbing: The removal of tree branches and cutting the trees into smaller logs is known as limbing. People who are involved in the process are known as sawyers or buckers.
- Skidding: The process of dragging or pulling the logs out of the forest to a nearby river bank, a road side or railway station is known as skidding. People who are involved in this process are known as skidders. Vehicles like wagon, cable skidders etc are now used for skidding logs.
- Hauling: In the final stage, the logs are transported to the mills or factories. River currents are used for transporting the logs downstream. Haulers have to ensure that the logs do not pile up and float swiftly down the river. Haulers are specialised as they have to jump from one log to the other. If they are not alert, then they can get trapped between the logs which can prove to be life threatening.

Dual government was a type of government in which, the British were in charge of collecting revenue meanwhile the Nawabs was in charge of law and order. It was a very unsatisfactory way of governing as neither the British nor the Nawabs had the complete responsibility.

In all these land revenue systems, the revenue was fixed at a very high rate. In Permanent settlement, the Company fixed the revenue so high that it became difficult for zamindars to pay revenues to the Company. The new land revenue system fixed very high revenue over the peasants. However peasants were unable to pay them and as a result, villages were deserted and ryots fled the countryside. It also resulted in revolts and protests from them.
