The plasma membrane is the boundary between the cell and its environment. It regulates what enters and exits the cell. Cells must maintain an appropriate amount of molecules to function inside them. They must also have a way to keep things out or to allow things to enter. This is the job of the plasma membrane.

Fractional distillation is the separation of a mixture into its component parts, or fractions. Chemical compounds are separated by heating them to a temperature at which one or more fractions of the compound will vaporize. It uses distillation to fractionate.
The process of separating the constituents of a liquid mixture by heating it and condensing separately the components according to their different boiling points. Fractional distillation is used to refine petroleum.
