Thousand of years ago when there were thick forest coverings on the earth , natural disasters like earthquake and floods came and the forests got covered under the layers of soil. As time passed many layers of soil got accumulated over the forest covers. The tress and plants sank deeper and deeper in the earth and were exposed to the high temperature and hight pressure. The absence of oxygen and the high temperature and pressure transformed the plants and trees into carbon. This process of formation of plants and trees into carbon is called carbonisation. Thus , coal was formed. It cannot be formed in science labs.
