The North Star or Pole Star – aka Polaris – is famous for holding nearly still in our sky while the entire northern sky moves around it. That's because it's located nearly at the north celestial pole, the point around which the entire northern sky turns. Polaris marks the way due north. Pole Star is a star which appears stationary from the Earth. Imagine a straight line passing through these stars . Extend this imaginary line towards the north direction ( nearly five times the distance between the two stars). This line will lead to a star , known as the Pole Star ( North Star ).

If the speed of an object is faster than the other object then we can say that an object is moving faster than another .
On a road we can easily spot the difference in speed of different moving object by simply looking at them, if we look at the position of vehicles at one instance of time and then again at the same vehicles after 5 seconds we can spot which vehicle moves the faster and which vehicle moves the slower, the distance moved by an object in a given instance of time will help us decide its speed, like for example in a 100m race, we can say who has the highest speed by looking at who covers 100m in the shortest time, if we have an idea of time and distance we can easily determine the speed.

Lightning can be explained in terms of charges produced due to rubbing. During a thunderstorm, the air currents move upwards and the water droplets move downwards. And this caused the separation of charge due to this vigorous motion.

As a result of this process, the positive charges collect near the upper edge and the negative charges accumulate near the lower edge of the cloud and also near the ground. As the charge gets accumulated, its magnitude becomes very large. Water droplets in the air act as a conductor of this charge.

These charges flow to meet, thus producing strikes of lightning and thunder. For this phenomenon to occur, a sufficiently high electric potential between two regions and a high resistance medium must be present.

Kinetic Energy:

The energy possessed by a body due to its motion is called its kinetic energy.

Formula for kinetic energy:

Kinetic Energy = (½) x mass x velocity x velocity, shortly represented as the following KE = (½) mv2

Examples:

  1. The energy possessed by a moving road roller
  2. The energy possessed by a fired bullet from a gun.
  3. The energy possessed by an arrow released from a bow.

Cognitive development means how children think, explore and figure things out. It is the development of knowledge, skills, problem solving and dispositions, which help children to think about and understand the world around them. Brain development is part of cognitive development. An example of cognitive development is the neurological development which occurs in the brain. Such development is characterized by the neuroplasticity of the brain, which involves brain repair following injury and the ability of the brain to adapt to new environmental and physiological conditions.

The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogenous compounds is nitrogen fixation. You have learnt about the bacterium Rhizobium. It is involved in the fixation of nitrogen in leguminous plants (pulses). Recall that Rhizobium lives in the root nodules of leguminous plants, such as beans and peas, with which it has a symbiotic relationship. Sometimes nitrogen gets fixed through the action of lightning. But you know that the amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere remains constant.

Rhizobium bacteria living in the root nodules of legume plants, fix nitrogen from the atmosphere.Microorganisms in the soil convert atmospheric nitrogen into ammonium compounds, thereby enabling the survival of plants and animals.Nitrogen is an essential constituent of proteins, nucleic acids, chlorophyll and vitamins.Blue green algae are able to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere.Nitrogen from the atmosphere is fixed by biological nitrogen fixers like blue green algae and some bacteria.Fungi are decomposers that degrade organic waste compounds into simple substances, ready for reuse by plants

If any object that is in motion comes to rest at a certain point of time. This happens due to friction.Friction is caused when two objects rub against each other. For example : A ball is being rolled and due to the friction caused between the ground and the ball it comes to a stop. There are 3 types of friction: *Static friction *Sliding friction * Rolling friction STATIC FRICTION is caused when an object in motion comes to a stop earlier due to the hard surface. SLIDING FRICTION is caused when an object slides on the surface. Here the friction is less compared to static friction. ROLLING FRICTION is caused when an object rolls over the surface .Here the friction is very less compared to other 2 frictions. Friction becomes higher when : *Shoes are fit with spikes at the bottom. *When brakes are applied in a vehicle. * When the surface in which the object moving is uneven and is very rough. Friction becomes lesser when: *Lubricants are used. *Usage if ball bearings * Usage of air cushion

Plants absorb water from the soil and evaporates it to form clouds. Deforestation leads to cutting down of trees. As a result less water is absorbed from the soil and it disturbs the water cycle. The formation of clouds become difficult which leads to reduced rainfall.
