The sliding friction is less than static friction because of the interlocking of irregularities in the two surfaces. When the object starts sliding the contact points on its surface, do not get enough time to lock into the contact points on the floor.
So the sliding friction is slightly less than the static friction.

Metals react with acids to produce hydrogen gas. If a matchstick is brought near the mouth of the tube containing the product of the reaction then we hear a pop sound. It is this hydrogen gas that burns with a pop sound.
- For instance, Magnesium reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to form magnesium chloride and hydrogen.

The upper layer of earth is called soil in which crop plants are grown. Soil provides minerals, water, air, humus and anchorage to the plants. Preparation of soil is the first step in cultivating a crop for food production. The soil is prepared by ploughing, levelling and manuring. This makes the soil fertile.

- Plants absorb minerals and nutrients from the soil via their roots. These minerals are dissolved in the water present in the soil. Then the water transports these nutrients to all parts of the plant, enabling growth and photosynthesis.
- Irrigation provides the moisture that is crucial during the germination phase of the plant’s life cycle.
- Irrigation also makes the soil more fertile (by adding moisture to it) and easier to plough.
- Proper irrigation also increases yield from the farm.

Reforestation is restocking of the destroyed forests by planting new trees. The planted trees should generally be of the same species which were found in that forest. We should plant at least as many trees as we cut. Reforestation can also take place naturally. If the deforested area is left undisturbed for some time, it re-establishes itself by natural growth of trees.

A person sleeping in such room gets carbon monoxide poisoning. CO combines with Hb more readily than oxygen forming carboxyhaemoglobin. This reduces the amount of free Hb available for carrying O2. Thus, the tissue is starved of O2. This is the reason why it is not advisable to sleep in closed rooms warmed with coals.
