A rain gauge is an instrument used by meteorologists and hydrologists to gather and measure the amount of liquid precipitation over a set period of time.The tipping bucket rain gauge consists of a funnel that collects and channels the precipitation into a small seesaw-like container. After a pre-set amount of precipitation falls, the lever tips, dumping the collected water and sending an electrical signal.

 1. Examples of insulators include plastics, Styrofoam, paper, rubber, glass and dry air.
 2. Two thin blankets usually warmer than one thick blanket because air is trapped between them and the air is bad conductor of heat. It does not pass heat from our body to the surroundings.
 3. Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it's used in a thermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures.

Amoeba takes in food using temporary finger-like extensions of the cell surface which fuse over the food particle forming a food-vacuole as shown in figure.

Inside the food vacuole, complex substances are broken down into simpler ones which then diffuse into the cytoplasm. The remaining undigested material is moved to the surface of the cell and thrown out.

Without photosynthesis it will affect the plant as it could not make food. The survival of almost all living organism directly or indirectly depends upon the food made by the plants.

Besides oxygen which is essential for the survival of all living organisms is produced during photosynthesis.

Thus, we can say that life would be impossible on the earth in the absence of photosynthesis.

Time taken by car to cover distance = 20 minutes = {tex}{20 \over 60 } = {1\over 3} \ hour{/tex}

Speed of car = {tex}{Total \ Distance \over time \ taken} = {18\over {1\over 3}}{/tex}

Life Cycle – Silk Moth: The life history of a silk moth starts when a female silk moth lays eggs. The larvae or caterpillars hatched from the eggs of the silk moth.

These silkworms feed on fresh mulberry leaves the silkworm grows in size and then becomes a pupa.

In the pupa stage, it weaves a net to hold itself. It then swings its head from side to side, secreting a fibre that hardens on contact with air. This fibre is made of a protein and becomes the silk fibre. The caterpillar covers itself completely with silk fibre and turns into a pupa, this covering is known as the cocoon.

The moth continues to develop within the cocoon. The silk thread or yarn is obtained from the silk moth’s cocoon.

The earliest clinical thermometers were mercury based, consisting of a small bulb filled with mercury and connected to a thin glass neck. As the temperature rises, the mercury expands, causing it to be forced up the neck.

However, due to the toxicity of mercury and the danger of these thermometers breaking, many clinical thermometers use other methods to determine temperature, such as infrared energy.

These clinical thermometers use an instrument called a thermopile to detect infrared energy, which is directly related to temperature. The thermometer then converts the measurements from the thermopile to temperature.

Ans. The covers that are used in greenhouse are either of glass or plastic which are transparent. So light can easily enter inside. Water is supplied to the plants inside. Ventilation is the most important factor for a greenhouse. Ventilator allows limited amount of fresh air to enter which contains atmospheric carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.

Pitcher plants is a carnivorous plants which have modified leaves known as pitfall traps—a prey-trapping mechanism featuring a deep cavity filled with digestive fluid liquid. Foraging, flying or crawling insects such as flies are attracted to the cavity formed by the cupped leaf, often by visual pigments, and nectar bribes. The rim of the pitcher (peristome) is slippery, when moistened by condensation or nectar, causing insects to fall into the trap. Pitcher plants may also contain waxy scale, inward and downward pointing (retrorse) hairs, to ensure that insects cannot climb out.[1] The small bodies of liquid contained within the pitcher traps.. They drown the insect, and the body of it is gradually dissolved. This may occur by bacterial action (the bacteria being washed into the pitcher by rainfall) or by enzymes secreted by the plant itself.

Photosynthesis is a a process, which need at least three things that can limit the process: light, water, and carbon dioxide. More light won’t help if we don’t have enough water and carbon dioxide.

Actually, most places on Earth have the same amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but a plant can only get it by opening holes in its leaves. These holes are too small for you to see without a strong microscope, but they are big enough to let water vapor out of the plant. So water is an important limit on a plant. More light is actually a problem if water is scarce, because even more water will evaporate from the plant.

This is an example of how increasing one factor (sunlight) can lead to another factor (water) being limiting.

The destruction of ozone layer is chemical change. The chemical equation for destruction of ozone can be written as:
Cl + O3 → ClO + O2 – The chlorine atom changes an ozone molecule to ordinary oxygen.
As during the reaction, ozone molecules destroy and oxygen molecules form. So new chemical substances are formed by consuming the starting material hence it is a chemical change.
