Humus - the organic constituent of soil, usually formed by the decomposition of plants and leaves. In most soil, the humus ranges from 2-10 percent, whereas it is up to 90 percent in peat bog.
The humus content is often determined after calculating the soil’s water content. The weighed dry soil sample is heated strongly so that the humus burns away. The loss of mass is the mass of humus that was burnt away.

The water kept in an earthen pot (matka) becomes cool during summer because earthen pot has infinite pores in it from which some water peeps out and gets evaporated during summers. As evaporation leads to cooling water inside the pot remains cool. Glass and metal do not have any pores. So the water placed inside glass and metal vessels cannot seep out and evaporate. Therefore, the water inside remains hot.

Excessive use of fertilisers makes soil acidic. As a result, plants cannot grow properly, and the yield decreases. Adding a base like quick lime, (calcium oxide) or slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) neutralises the soil and makes it suitable for plants. Similarly, when soil is basic in nature, organic matter is added to release acid and make it neutral, and thus, suitable for plants.

Forest acts as a natural absorber of water. It allows rain water to seep through. In the absence of trees, the rain water would hit the ground directly resulting in flood. However, because of the presence of trees, rain water does not hit the ground directly. It rather hits the ground slowly. Hence, before flooding, all the rain water seeps through ground. In this way, forests prevent floods.
