The word Heterotrophic is the combination of two words i.e. Hetero + Trophos. Hetero means ‘others’ and ‘trophos’ means nourishment. If organisms depend on others for their food, such a mode of nutrition is called Hetetrophic Nutrition.
Animals cannot make their food themselves. They depend for food upon plants. Therefore, nutrition in animals is called Hetetrophic Nutrition. Animals are known as Heterotrophs.

To carry heat from one part of an object to its other part or from one object to another object is called transfer of heat. Like if we dip a steel spoon in a cup of hot tea, we find that the temperature of a spoon rises and it becomes hot. The heat transfers from an object at higher temperature to another object at lower temperature. The transfer of heat stops when the two objects attain same temperature. The heat can be transferred from a hot to cold object in three different ways:
- By conduction: The process by which heat is transferred from the hotter end to the colder end of an object is known as conduction. The conduction process takes place only in solids.
- By convection: The process by which heat is transferred from the hotter parts of a liquid to its colder parts by the movement of the liquid itself is known as convection. For e.g. water is a good convector.
- By radiation: The process of transfer of heat of hot electric bulbs to our hand held below it is called radiation.

Wash the thermometer with an antiseptic solution. Hold it firmly and give few jerks. The jerks will bring down the temperature to the normal. The bulb should be placed under the tongue. After a minute take the thermometer out and note the reading. The temperature should always be stated in its unit i.e. degree Celsius.

Sweet potatoes can be grown in a jar that contains only water in it.
Here, I have explained the conditions required and observations that were made when a sweet potato was made to grow in the above mentioned environment.
Sweet potatoes are dicotyledonous plants which belong to the morning glory family hence it requires more sun light and care like an Ivy plant.
Step 1:
Fill a jar with water to two third of its portion and submerge a sweet potato in it.
Step 2:
Two third of the Sweet potato must be kept submerged into the water. So use some tooth picks to impale the potato in order to hang the above stipulated portion of the potato to hang inside the water.
Step 3:
Keep the setup under direct sunlight.
Observation:
You can witness some branches of vines sprouting out from the Potato within two or three weeks. Cut off the vines when they grow too long in order to get a bushy like appearance.
