Purification of drinking water is done at the following four stages -
- Water from a river or lake is brought through canals or long pipes to the water work, where it is mixed with the required quantities of alum and soda lime solutions. These substances react with one another to form aluminium hydroxide, a jelly-like, sticky solid.
- It is then pumped into big settling tanks, where most of the suspended impurities settle down in two or three days.
- The clear water still containing some suspended matter is passed through successive filters of boulders, gravel, coarse sand and fine sand.
- The clear water from the filters is chlorinated and then passed to the reservoirs for distribution in the city.

The water which is safe for drinking without any risk of health problems is called potable water. Water can be made safe for drinking in the following ways:
● Household filters such as candle type filters can be used at homes to make the water safe for drinking.
● Boiling of water can be done before drinking at home. Boiling kills, the germs present in water and makes water safe for drinking.
● Chlorination can also be done for purifying water at home. It can be done by adding chlorine tablets or bleaching powder into water. Only specific number of chlorine tablets should be used.

| Real Image | Virtual Image |
| The image is due to reflection or refraction, when the light arises from an object and converges to a certain point | The image produced when the light arising from an object appears to strike a certain point |
| The real image can be captured on screen as it is the result of actual intersection of ray of light | It cannot be captured on a screen as it is the imaginary intersection of ray of light |
| The images are inverted | The images are erect |
| Converging lens are used to produce the image | Diverging lens are used to produce the image |
| Concave mirror is used to produce the image | A plane mirror or convex mirror is used to produce the image |

An earth shelter is a structure (usually a house) with earth (soil) against the walls, on the roof, or that is entirely buried underground.
Earth acts as thermal mass, making it easier to maintain a steady indoor air temperature and therefore reduces energy costs for heating or cooling.

Rear view mirrors are the convex mirrors present in the vehicles to see the traffic behind them. These mirrors possess the property of lateral inversion i.e. the right hand side of the object is seen as the left hand side. Thus, the word AMBULANCE is written laterally inverted in front of the ambulance because when seen in the rear view mirror by another vehicle, the image of the word would get inverted, letting the driver to read the word properly so that he can provide way to the ambulance.

The basic unit of distance is metre (m).
The basic unit of time is second (s).
Speed = Distance/Time
Therefore, the basic unit of speed is m/s.

The easiest way to make a convex/concave mirror is to take a spoon. The inner part (where you put soup in) it's a concave mirror, the outer part is convex. Take a spoon and flip it so that you see you reflection from the outer side of the spoon.
Now move your finger near to the spoon, you’ll see the image of the finger in the spoon always smaller than the real dimensions.
Now flip the spoon and take the inner surface, and repeat your “experiment”. Now you’ll see the image gettin bigger while you move the finger near to the spoon. Then, at a certain distance. the image will be spread to the whole surface. Moving it further the image would flip upside-down, and start to get smaller.
That’s basic optical physics, done with a spoon.

If the image is upright of the same size as the object and it does not change
in size by moving the object the mirror is plane.
If the image is upright magnified and it becomes inverted on moving the
object away from the mirror then the mirror is concave.
If the image is upright and diminished and it remains upright on moving
the object away from the mirror then the mirror is convex.

Reforestation is the process of regenerating or replanting forest areas that have been destroyed or damaged for the benefits of mankind. Reforestation and afforestation share the same meaning i.e. afforestation is another name given to reforestation. Occasionally forests have the capability to regenerate due to the trees in the surroundings or due to the dispersion of seeds. However, forest lands that are badly degraded cannot be regenerated unless plants have been planted by using native methods.

The branches of the tall trees look like a roof over the other plants in the forest. This is called canopy.
There are several organisms and micro-organisms that live in the soil that they feed upon the dead plant and animal tissues and convert them into a dark coloured substance called humus.
Large scale cutting of trees to clear land for human use is called deforestation.
