    जले यदा अनपेक्षितानि हानिकारकाणि विषयुक्तानि रासायनिकवस्तूनि, आम्लानि, तैलादीनि विलीयन्ते, तदा तादृशं जलं जीविनां प्राणधारणाय योग्यं न भवति। इदं जलप्रदूषणं इत्युच्यते। जलप्रदूषणं (Water pollution) प्रमुखेषु परिसरमालिन्येषु अन्यतमं विद्यते। सरोवराः, नद्यः, समुद्राः इत्यादिषु अनपेक्षितानां वस्तूनां संयोगेन जलमालिन्यं भविष्यति । जलप्रदूषणस्य एतानि प्रमुखानि कारणानि -पेट्रोलियम् तैलम्, डि.डि.टि इत्यादयः कीटनाशकाः, पि.सि.बि (पालि क्लोरिनेटड् बैफीनैल्) रासायनिकाः कीटनाशकाः, पारदः, क्याङ्मियम् आर्सैनिक् इत्यादिलोहाः, अणुशक्तिकारागारेभ्यः निसृतानि अनुपयोगीनि वस्तूनि नगरेभ्यः बहिः निष्कासितानि फेनकानि, तत्र प्रमुखानि । एवं विविधानि रासायनिकानि जलमालिन्यं कुर्वन्ति । जलजन्तूनां प्राणधरणाय जले वीलीनः आम्लजनकः अत्यावश्यकः । एतानि लवणानि जले विलीनं भूय आम्लजनकानिलं दुर्बलं कुर्वन्ति । एवं तस्मिन् मलिने जले जलजन्तवः जीवितुम् अशक्ताः भवन्ति म्रियन्ते च। जलं बहूनां लवणानां द्रावकम्। यदा जले विषयुक्तानि लवणानि विलीनानि, ताद्दशं जलं मनुष्यैः उपयुज्यते, तदा एते विषाः मनुष्याणां शरीरं प्रविशन्ति तेन च अश्रुता अज्ञातपूर्वाः रोगाः भवन्ति । भारतदेशे पूज्यायां गङ्गानद्यां यमुनायां च नगरीयैः कार्यागारैः निःसृतेभ्यः दूषणेभ्यः प्रतिदिनं जलमालिन्यं प्रभूतं सञ्जायते । अनेन नदीजलम् उपयोगाय अनर्हं भवति। समुद्रजलस्य मालिन्यात् मीनाः अन्ये समुद्रजीविनः नितरां क्लिश्यन्ति, म्रियन्ते च। अन्तर्जलस्य प्रदूषणात् भूमेः उष्णतायाः जलस्थित्याः व्यत्ययः भवति येन वर्षाचक्रे व्यत्ययाः भवन्ति । जलमालिन्यं रोद्धुं बहवः प्रयत्नाः प्रशासनेन विद्येयकद्वारा योजिताः। ‘जलमालिन्यनियन्त्रणार्थं, तत्कृते प्रशासनस्यैकः विभागः तत्परः अपि च वर्तते । मलिनजलस्य स्रावेन नानाविधाः रोगाः जायन्ते। ताम्रम्, क्याड्मियम्, कोबाल्ट् लवणैः दूषितस्य जलस्य उपयोगेन क्यान्सर्, नररोगाः हृदयरोगाः जायन्ते। प्रदूषितजले स्नानकरणात् चर्मरोगाः प्रजायन्ते। पारद-लोहेन तत्संयुक्तलवणैश्च प्रदूषितस्य जलस्य सेवनात् "मिनिमा" इति नूतनः रोगः जायते। पारदेन प्रदूषितस्य जलस्य सेवनेन जपान् देशे क्रिस्ताब्दे १९५६ वर्षे मिनिमाट इति ग्रामे केचन जनाः नेत्रहीनाः बभूवुः। केचन उन्मत्ताः जाताः। केचन शरीरभागानां निश्चेष्टतां प्रापुः। एताद्दशरोगस्य हेतुपरिशीलनात्-पारदप्रदूषितस्य जलस्य सेवनेन एवं भवतीति ज्ञातम्। तदारभ्य एतादृशरोगस्य मिनिमाट -इत्येव निर्देशः कृतः। सर्वे स्वास्थ्यहेतोः शुद्धं जलमेव पिबेयुः। जलमालिन्यस्य नियन्त्रणाय सततं प्रयत्नः करणीयः। संस्कृतभाषायां जल्स्य जीवनमिति पर्यायपदं भवति । एवं जलमालिन्यं नाम जीवनमालिन्यमित्येव।
