TYPES OF CHARTS IN MICROSOFT EXCEL 2010 Microsoft Excel supports many types of charts to display your data in ways that are meaningful and provide impressive visual support to your audience. Charts available in Microsoft Excel 2010 are as follows: Column chart shows the data changes over a period of time or illustrates comparisons among items. A Line chart shows the different trends in data at equal intervals. It shows data in different styles of lines varying at equal intervals. A pie chart shows one data series in the form of the comparative size of things that make up the data series to the sum of the items A bar chart shows comparison among individual items. A scatter chart shows pairs of values in scatter format. An area chart shows the trend of values over time or category .

a) Define a chart? What is the need of charts in Excel? and - Chart is a pictorial representation of data. Charts are needed in Excel for the following reasons: i) It is much easier to understand. ii) Data and information can be presented in an attractive manner. iii) It is more impressive and informative than a simple data statement. b) Explain the different elements of a chart. ans - The different elements of a chart are i) X-Axis: It is the horizontal axis of the chart and is also known as category axis. ii) Y-Axis: It is the vertical axis of the chart and is also known as value axis. iii) Data Series: It is a group of data from which the chart is derived. iv) Chart Area: It is the area where the chart components are enclosed. v) Plot Area: It is the area of the chart where the actual chart is plotted. vi) Chart Title: It is the text at the top of the chart used to specify what the chart represents. vii) Axis Title: It is the title given to the x-axis and y-axis. viii) Gridlines: They are the horizontal and vertical lines inserted on the plot area to enhance the readability of the chart. ix) Legend: It is used to identify each data series. x) Data Label: It is a text or label that provided additional information on data points. c) How many types of charts are available in Excel?. Ans - There are 10 types of charts available in Excel. They are column chart, bar chart, line chart, area chart, pie chart, doughnut chart, scatter chart, radar chart, 3D surface chart and stock chart. d) Specify the purpose of following chart types: Ans- i) Column It is used to display the data which changes over a period of time, and compares various items. ii) Pie It is used to display the contribution of each value to a total value. iii) Area It is used to display the magnitude of change over times. It also shows relationship of parts to a whole by displaying the sum of a plotted value. iv) Stock It is used to track the stock market activity. e) Define Sparklines in a chart. Sparklines are tiny, word sized charts that can appear in a cell. It is of three types: Line, Column and Win/Loss
