The method of separating a mixture by using a sieve is called sieving.
Sieving is used to separate those mixtures which have components of different sizes. In this process, the mixture having components of different sizes are put in a sieve and the sieve is moved back and forth continuously. The smaller particles pass through the holes of the sieve and collect in a vessel kept below. The bigger particles remain behind in the sieve.

15:45 15/45 = 1/3 = 1:3
40 : 120 = 40/120 = 1/3 = 1:3
Since 15:45 = 40:120
Therefore 15, 45, 40, 120 are in proportion.
