Test for protein:
- Take 2 ml of the given food-stuff solution in a test tube.
- Add a little of dilute sodium hydroxide solution till the mixture clears.
- Then add 2 to 3 drops of copper sulphate solution and shake well.
- If a violet colour appears in the solution, then protein is present in the given food-stuff.Note: If the food item to be tested is in solid form, then a powder or a paste is made by grinding it and adding few drops of water in a test tube. Afterwards, the test tube is made to shake well to form a solution or suspension.

i. Scurvy: It is caused due to the deficiency of vitamin C. Symptoms of scurvy includes:
- Bleeding from gums
- Loosening of teeth
- Wounds do not heal easily.
- Rickets: Rickets is caused due to the deficiency of vitamin D. The main symptoms of this disease are bow legs (bent legs) and a pigeon type chest.

Kalpana Chawla was born at Kamal, in Haryana. She was born in India, but married an American and became a naturalised citizen. So she is called an Indian- American. After qualifying as a pilot, Chawla applied to NASA space shuttle program. She was first hired as a Research Scientist at NASA. In 1994 she was selected at NASA for training as an astronaut. It was her success as a pilot which gave her the idea that she could become an astronaut.
