Hyder Ali
Tipu's father, Hyder Ali, was a military officer in service to the Kingdom of Mysore; he rapidly rose in power, and became the de facto ruler of Mysore in 1761. Hyder himself claimed descent from the Banu Hashim clan of the Quraysh tribe of Arabs[citation needed], the tribe of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad. Hyder's father, Fateh Muhammad, was born in Kolar, and served as a commander of 50 men in the bamboo rocket artillery (mainly used for signalling) in the army of the Nawab of Carnatic.

The rulers of mahajanapadas introduced taxation because they wanted to build forts and buildings in order to protect their people. They didn't have enough money to do so. That is the reason why they started collecting taxes as they were not able to continue with their work with the money they got as gifts. As the rulers of the mahajanapadas were, building huge forts, maintaining big armies, they needed more resources. And they needed officials to collect these. So, instead of depending on occasional gifts brought by people, as in the case of the raja of the janapadas, they started collecting regular taxes.
