The Kushanas invaded India around 1st century BC. Of all the foreign invaders the influence of the Kushanas was widely felt in India. That is why the Kushanas are said to be the most important of all the foreigners who invaded India. The Kushanas were a branch of the Yue-chi tribe. The Yue-chi nomads had their original home on the Chinese frontier wherefrom they moved to the Sirdariya and the Amudariya river valleys.

The greatest king of the Kushana was Kanishka. He is famous for his military, political, and spiritual achievements. The fame of Kanishka rests not so such on his military conquest as on the patronage of Buddhism. His personal faith was Buddhism. The Buddhists claim that Kanishka was almost like a second Asoka to their religion. He convoked the last Buddhist Council and prepared authorized commentaries of the scriptures. His court was graced by well-known scholars like Asvaghosha, Nagarjuna, Parsva, Vasumitra and Charaka.
