There are two main types of government, viz. monarchy and democracy.
Monarchy: When the head of the government is a king, this is called a monarchy. The king enjoys supreme power. Power is transferred from one king to another on the basis of inheritance. This means that the son or daughter of a king becomes the next king or queen. In this system, people have no say in selection of government. Monarchy is still being practiced in a handful of countries, e.g. Bhutan and Saudi Arabia.
Democracy: In a democratic government, the rulers are elected by people. Democracy is defined as the government by the people, for the people and of the people. In this system, power is transferred from one ruler to another on the basis of people’s choice.

Ashoka built shrines and monasteries and inscribed Buddhist teachings on rocks and pillars in many places. He sent missionaries to countries as remote as Greece and Egypt; his own son, a monk, carried Buddhism to Sri Lanka, where it is still the major religion. He sent many messengers including Mahendra and Sanghamitra to various places like Egypt, Syria, Greece and Sri Lanka too, for preaching Dharma. No war was fought after the Kalinga war and the people of Mauryan Empire led a peaceful life of tolerance and economic progress, making the Mauryan Empire one of the strongest of its time.

Arikamedu was a coastal settlement where ships unloaded goods from distant lands. A massive brick structure, which may have been a warehouse, was found at the site. Other finds include pottery from the Mediterranean region, such as amphorae (tall double-handled jars that contained liquids such as wine or oil) and stamped red-glazed pottery, known as Arretine Ware, which was named after a city in Italy. This was made by pressing wet clay into a stamped mould. There was yet another kind of pottery which was made locally, though Roman designs were used. Roman lamps, glassware and gems have also been found at the site

The best-known of the rulers who controlled the Silk Route were the Kushanas, who ruled over central Asia and north-west India around 2000 years ago. Their two major centres of power were Peshawar and Mathura. Taxila was also included in their kingdom. During their rule, a branch of the Silk Route extended from Central Asia down to the seaports at the mouth of the river Indus, from where silk was shipped westwards to the Roman Empire. The Kushanas were among st the earliest rulers of the subcontinent to issue gold coins. These were used by traders along the Silk Route.

- He accepted the Buddhism to save his large territory from foreign attack. For this he spreaded Buddhism outside of India.
- Even he adopted policy of Dhamma, which was a way of life, a code of conduct and a set of principles to be adopted and practiced by the people at large.
- Buddhism was his personal belief and Dhamma signifies a general code of conduct. So I can also conclude that to promote the policy of Dhamma he accepted Buddhism.
