Megaliths are stone structures. They were used to mark a burial site. A single large stone or several stones could be used to compose a megalith. Some megaliths could be seen above the ground, but some could be underground as well.
The practice of erecting megaliths began around 3000 years ago. This practice was prevalent in the Deccan, the south India, the north-east and Kashmir. Megaliths were probably erected to serve as a signpost. This helped in easily locating the burial site.
They were used to mark burial sites. Megaliths were found on the surface and underground. The dead were buried in those megaliths, along with various things such as pots (known as black and red ware), tools and weapons made of iron, gold ornaments, skeletons of horses, conch shells, etc.

With the change in the climate, the plants and animals used for food also witnessed some changes. Men, women and children observed several things related to plants, such as, places where edible plants were found, how seeds broke off stalks, fell on the ground and new plants sprouted from them. Perhaps they started protecting the plants from birds and animals so that they could grow and the seeds could ripen. In this way, people became farmers.

1. Staying at one place finished all available food—plant or animal resources.
2. Animals moved from place to place, and hence, this made the hunter-gatherers to move along with them for hunting them down.
3. Plants and trees bore fruit in different seasons. Thus, people had to move season to season to find different kinds of plants.
4. Plants and animals needed water to survive. Although most of the water bodies (lakes, ponds and streams) were perennial, some were seasonal. Thus, people living on the banks had to go in search of water during the dry seasons.
