The length of the space between two points (or two places) is called distance. Standard unit of measuring length is called meter.
A unit of measurement which has a fixed value which does not change from person to person or place to place, is called a standard unit of measurement length. Whether a meter is used by one person or another person, whether the meter is used in one country or another country, it always represents exactly the ‘same length’. The length of meter does not change from one person to person or place to place. It is necessary to have standard units of measurements for the sake of uniformity in measurements.

Acclimatization is the process in which an individual organism adjusts to a gradual change in its environment (such as a change in temperature, humidity, photoperiod, or pH), allowing it to maintain performance across a range of environmental conditions. The aquatic animals live and breathe in water and face very specific situations, compared to terrestrial species. Different environmental factors such as salinity, light, very variable oxygen content or presence of ammonia involve particular capabilities of adaptation.Proper acclimation will take care of slowly changing the animal’s body temperature back to a normal temperature without stress.

All living organisms prefer to live in those places which are best suited to their needs. Such surroundings where organisms live is called a habitat. A habitat provides food, water, air, light, shelter and a place for breeding to the plants and animals living in it. Different plants and animals live in different habitats like deserts, mountains, grasslands, garden, soil, river, lake, ocean, etc.
The two main groups of habitats are terrestrial habitats and aquatic habitats. The plants and animals that live on land are said to live in terrestrial habitats. Examples of terrestrial habitats are deserts, mountains, forest, grassland, garden, field, soil and home. A cactus and camel live in dry habitat called desert.
The habitats of plants and animals that live in water are called aquatic habitats. Examples of aquatic habitats are ponds, swamps, lakes, rivers and oceans, etc.
A habitat consists of living as well as non-living components. The living things such as plants, animals and micro-organisms are called biotic components of a habitat.
The non-living things in a habitat are called its abiotic components. The abiotic components of a habitat are soil, rocks, air, water, sunlight, temperature, etc.

When an object is heated, it increases in size thus expansion takes place on heating. When the hot object is cooled, it decreases in size and comes back to the original size by contraction.
Example - Fixing of iron rim to the wooden wheel of a cart:
The iron rims are fitted around wooden wheels by the process of expansion on heating.
The iron rim is made slightly smaller than the wooden wheel. The rim is then uniformly heated which expands on heating and becomes bigger in size. It is then put around the wooden wheel and allowed to cool. The iron rim contracts on cooling and thus fits tightly on the wooden wheel.

Non-homogeneous systems in which solids are dispersed in liquids, are called suspensions. A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which the solute particles do not dissolve but remain suspended throughout the bulk of the medium. Particles of a suspension are visible to the naked eye.
