Fix a lighted candle on a table. Take a rubber tube, stretch it straight and look through it at the flame of the candle with one eye (keeping the other eye closed) [see Figure (a)]. We will find that when the rubber tube is straight, we can see the light of candle flame through it.
Now, bend the rubber tube a little and look through it at the candle flame again [see Figure (b)]. We cannot see the light of candle flame through a bent rubber tube. This means that the light of candle flame can travel through the hole of straight rubber tube but not through the bent rubber tube. From this observation we conclude that light travels in a straight line.

A lump of cotton has air trapped in it, in the spaces between the cotton wool. When water is poured on it or a lump of cotton is dipped in water, the air so trapped gets displaced appears in the form of bubbles. The result is that no air space is left between the cotton wool. In this way, the size of the lump decreases so that it shrinks.

The desert animals like rats and snakes dig deep burrows where they live during the hot day time. These burrows stay cool and protect them from sun’s heat as well as loss of water from their body. They come out during cool night in search of food.

In order to obtain silk, mulberry trees are cultivated, silkworms are reared and their cocoons are collected to get silk fibres. The various steps involved are:
(i) Rearing of silkworms: A female silk moth lays hundreds of eggs at a time. The eggs are stored by the farmers at suitable temperature and humidity under hygienic conditions. When the eggs hatch, silkworms come out of the eggs. The silkworms are fed mulberry leaves. After 25-30 days, the silkworms stop eating and get ready to spin cocoons. The silkworms enclose themselves completely inside the silken cocoons in two or three days.
(ii) Processing of cocoons to obtain silk fibres: The pile of cocoons is placed in hot water. Hot water makes the silk fibres of cocoons to separate out. The long fibres are obtained by unwinding the threads from cocoons. This process is called reeling.
(iii) Converting silk fibres into silk cloth: Silk fibres obtained from cocoons are spun (twisted) to form silk threads called silk yarn. The silk yarn is then woven on looms into silk cloth by the weavers.

Seeds need water to germinate, and absorb it from the soil or the damp paper towel, or the warm water. This allows the stored food reserves in the seeds to begin to break down, and these are used by the growing plant until it has its own leaves and can make its own food through photosynthesis.
Seeds that are kept completely dry will not germinate, which means that seeds can be stored for one year to the next.

Some boreal forest animals avoid the stresses of winter by spending the cold season in hibernation. Brown bears and black bears, marmots, and jumping mice hibernate. Wood frogs and many species of insects hibernate so deeply that their bodies actually freeze. In winter, the boreal forest's colors shift from greens, browns, yellows, and reds to whites and greys. Some animals, such as ermine, snowshoe hare, and ptarmigan, change their colors accordingly-making them harder to see as they forage or hunt.
