Diesel trains began to replace steam in the late 1930s, however, it took about ten years for diesels to be the standard motive power used. In the 1950s, diesels began taking over steam power, as they were easier to maintain, and more efficient. Diesel locomotives required less maintenance and fewer crew members to run.

Rectilinear motion is the motion of an object that moves in a straight path. For example, a train moving on a track, a parade, coins tossed in the air are all in rectilinear motion. Circular motion is the motion of an object that moves at a fixed distance from a fixed point. Here, all objects rotate in circular motion. Hot water that falls into a tea cup from a vending machine is in rectilinear motion. Athletes running the 100-meter dash along the track are in rectilinear motion. Planes in the sky that move in a straight path are considered to be in rectilinear motion.

Flax fibers Flax fiber is extracted from the bast beneath the surface of the stem of the flax plant. Flax fiber is soft, lustrous, and flexible; bundles of fiber have the appearance of blonde hair, hence the description "flaxen" hair. It is stronger than cotton fiber, but less elastic. A beam balance is used to measure the mass. It consists of a horizontal beam, supported at its centre. The beam can move freely about its support and a pointer is attached to the centre of the beam. Two similar pans are suspended at equal distances from the centre of the beam by means of strings of equal lengths. The object whose mass is to be measured is kept on one pan and the standard known masses are kept on the other pan till the beam is horizontal and the pointer is vertical. Then the sum of the known masses gives the mass of the object.

On a day-to-day basis, we are faced with various instances when we are required to separate substances from one another. Whether it is picking out chillies from our paranthas/poha or separating tea leaves from tea while serving it, the need for separation of substances is something we encounter on a daily basis. It is usually because of one or all three of the following reasons:
-
To separate two dissimilar but useful elements like in the case of butter and milk. Milk is churned in order to obtain butter.
-
To segregate useless elements from the useful ones like in the case of separating tea leaves from tea.
-
To remove and discard impurities or potentially harmful substances like picking out small pieces of stones and other impurities from rice and wheat.

Frictional force refers to the force generated by two surfaces that contacts and slide against each other.
A few factors affecting the frictional force:
- These forces are mainly affected by the surface texture and amount of force impelling them together.
- The angle and position of the object affect the amount of frictional force.
- If an object is placed flat against an object, then the frictional force will be equal to the weight of the object.
- If an object is pushed against the surface, then the frictional force will be increased and becomes more than the weight of the object.
