LCM pertains to two or more numbers.

Factorisation pertains to only one number.

LCM finds the features that are common to a group of numbers.

Example: Say we have two numbers 144 and 256. We will factorise each number as shown below:

144 = 2x2x2x2x(3x3).

256 = 2x2x2x2x[2x2x2x2].

LCM considers all the factors that are common to both plus takes other factors that are not common to either of the two series. The ones that are not common to both the numbers are shown within brackets for identification

LCM = 2x2x2x2x[2x2x2x2]x(3x3) = 2304
