  1. Rip was a good natured man who lives in a village by the Kaatskill Mountains.
  2. Everyone in his village loved Rip because he was a very simple person.
  3. Children loved him because he taught them how to fly kites.
  4. He was also very lazy.
  5. He had a dog named Wolf.
  6. In order to avoid doing work, Rip would wander into the woods with his dog.
  7. After scaling the mountain, Rip felt tired.
  8. It was already late in the afternoon so he lay down and began daydreaming.
  9. When it woke up it was evening time.
  10. Suddenly he heard somebody call out his name, “Rip Van Winkel”
  11. He saw a short old man with thick hair and grizzled beard.
  12. He requested Rip to help him carry the barrel and Rip agreed to help.
  13. Soon they arrived at a place where many others like the short man were playing ninepins.
  14. They all had different coloured beards.
  15. Rip grew frightened of them.
  16. The bearded man emptied the contents of the barrel and gave a glass to Rip to drink.
  17. He had a few glasses of the drink and fell deep asleep.
  18. When he woke up, he was at the same place where he met the short man but he couldn’t find his dog.
  19. On going back to the village, nobody recognized him.
  20. He realised that he now has a beard and wrinkled skin.
  21. Soon one woman identified him.
  22. She asked him where he was all this time and told him that they didn’t see him for 20 years.
  23. Rip Van Winkle was in a deep sleep for 20 years.

  • Every cell in living organism is built up of about 75% of water, hence allows the cell to function appropriately. Cells would not able to carry out normal functions and life cannot exist without water.

  • Humans use water in many ways. Drinking water is the most obvious use, but it is also used for domestic purpose like washing and cleaning, and in industries. Water is also utilized in generating electricity through hydropower.

  • The water’s specific heat is its unique characteristics. This indicates that water takes a lot of time to heat up and a lot of time cool down. It helps in regulating temperatures on earth as they stay in a range which is acceptable for life on earth to exist.
