The heroine of the story, Heidi Schwaller, is now aged 92 and lives in central Switzerland. In the book Heidi spends three years living with her grandfather in a humble chalet high in the Swiss Alps. Dete takes Heidi to live with Heidi's grandfather, Alm-Uncle, who is the father of Heidi's father. Her grandfather lives in Dorfli, where he maintains his distance from others and grazes livestock ("Alm" refers to the mountain ranges where he grazes his flock). The story is about an orphan girl, Heidi, who has been sent to live with a lonely, angry man at the top of a mountain in the Swiss Alps. This man is her grandfather. Surprisingly, Heidi's grandfather turns out to be welcoming and loving and lets Heidi stay in his mountain home, which she adores.
