An abacus is a manual aid to calculating that consists of beads or disks that can be moved up and down on a series of sticks or strings within a usually wooden frame. The abacus itself doesn't calculate; it's simply a device for helping a human being to calculate by remembering what has been counted.

When a force is applied to a moving object any of the following possibilities could arise.
- The force may act in the same direction as the direction of motion of the object, producing an acceleration in the body, increasing its velocity with the passage of time. This is the case say of a car being accelerated.
- The force may act in a direction opposite to the direction of motion of the object, producing a deceleration in the object, stopping it ultimately. A car being braked to stop is a case in point.
- The force may act at an angle to the moving body, sufficient to overcome resistance to its motion. Motion of a lawn-mower is a case in point.
- The force may be acting at right angles to the motion of the body, neither accelerating it nor decelrating it, but constantly changing its direction of motion, and constraining it to move in a circle.
