- Shivaji was born to Shahaji Bhonsle, a Maratha general who held the jagirs of Pune and Supe under the Bijapur Sultanate. Shivaji’s mother was Jijabai, a pious woman whose religious qualities had a profound influence on him. Shahaji had also served the Ahmednagar and Deccan sultanates.
- Shivaji was given excellent training in military warfare and administration. He was married for the first time in 1640 to Saibai.
- Shivaji displayed his military zeal for the first time in 1645, when as a teenager, he successfully got control of the Torna Fort which was under Bijapur.
- He also acquired the Kondana Fort. Both these forts were under Adil Shah of Bijapur. Shah then got Shahaji imprisoned in a bid to contain Shivaji. Some accounts say that Shivaji surrendered these forts to get his father released. Shahaji died in 1664-65 in an accident. After this, Shivaji resumed his raids and extended his territories.
- He achieved great name when he defeated Afzal Khan, a veteran general of Adil Shah.
- In the Battle of Pratapgarh in 1659, Shivaji’s forces vanquished the Bijapur Sultanate’s army. From this victory, he acquired a large quantity of weapons and horses which greatly added to his growing Maratha army’s strength.
- In the same year, another battle was fought with the Adilshahi camp at Kolhapur where Shivaji’s outnumbered army defeated the enemy force. Shivaji displayed great military prowess during this battle. This victory now alarmed Aurangzeb.

In the geographical studies and research works, maps and globes are used for almost same purpose.
Both are used for watching and locating different places on the earth.
But maps are more preferable because of it's portability, map is just a piece of paper which we can carry to anywhere, but globes are large spherical solid object which is very difficult to carry around.

All of the imaginary circles perpendicular to the Equator are called meridians of longitudes. These circles have the same centre, which is also the centre of the earth.
Longitude is the measurement east or west of the prime meridian. Longitude is measured by imaginary lines that run around the Earth vertically (up and down) and meet at the North and South Poles. These lines are known as meridians.

Meridians are another name for lines of longitude. These lines are drawn on maps and globes so that people can locate places. Meridians are lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole. Meridians are not parallel. They converge or come together at the Poles. They number from the Prime Meridian (line 0) to 180W and from the Prime Meridian to 180E.

The Moon
The moon is our nearest neighbor in the solar system. It is the only satellite of the earth. Moon is 384,400 km from the earth. Since it is so near from us, hence it appears so big; compared to any other celestial body. The diameter of the moon is just one-fourth the diameter of the earth.
The moon takes about 27 days to make one revolution around the earth. It takes the same number of days to complete one rotation around its axis. Due to this, only one face of the moon is visible from the earth. Due to this, we get to see different shapes of the moon on different days of the month.
Phases of Moon: When the moon appears like a circular disc, it is called the full moon. The full moon day is called ‘poornima’ in Hindi. When no moon is visible in the sky, it is called the new moon. When the moon appears like a sickle, it is called the crescent moon. Sometimes, the moon appears like a semicircle. The full moon appears once in a month.
The moon has no water or air. The climate of the moon is very harsh and is not suitable for life. There are lots of hills and craters on the surface of the moon. When you will observe the full moon carefully, you can easily see the shadows of hills and mountains.
